Bruce Feldman ✔ @brucefeldmancfb Will Muschamp out at #UF. I expect #Gators will consider RichRod, Freeze, Gundy, Malzahn & Bob Stoops. Maybe Mullen: foxs.pt/1xuzzVLWhere Foley turns next will be interesting. The Gators have had big success when going with offensive guys with Spurrier and Urban Meyer leading them to national titles, while Foley's other two hires, unproven assistants Ron Zook and Muschamp, just didn't work out. Expect Arizona's Rich Rodriguez, Ole Miss' Hugh Freeze and Auburn's Gus Malzahn to get consideration. Another long-shot could be former NFL coach Mike Shanahan, a former Gator OC, who has been intrigued by the job, but his age at 62 would make him seem like less of an option. The 51-year-old Rodriguez shapes up as a compelling candidate. He has recruited Florida very well in his previous stops and has a dynamic system. He won big at West Virginia, beat Georgia in a Sugar Bowl and led the Mountaineers to three top-10 finishes in his final three seasons in Morgantown before leaving for Ann Arbor. At Michigan, he inherited little offensive talent and struggled in three seasons, particularly on defense. His teams did improve, but he was fired before his successor Brady Hoke led the Wolverines, with all Rodriguez recruits, to an 11-2 season and a Sugar Bowl win. Since then the Wolverines program has backslid. Rodriguez came to Arizona and provided a jolt for the Wildcats, turning a long dormant program into one that has gone 24-12 and defeated the Pac-12's best team, Oregon, twice in the past two seasons. This season Arizona is 8-2 and has a chance to play for the Pac-12 title despite most of the team's best players being freshmen and sophomores. Rodriguez and his family like Tucson and he has a very good relationship with AD Greg Byrne, but UF has much, much bigger resources and can offer the West Virginia native a lot more than Arizona can. Freeze has been a recruiting machine in Oxford and quickly turned the Rebels into a top-10 team. He's a creative offensive coach and a superb motivator, but it remains to be seen if he'd leave Ole Miss for UF. Malzahn, like Freeze and Rodriguez, is a brilliant offensive mind and he's returned Auburn to the elite after the program plummeted after he left Gene Chizik's staff. Sources say Foley is a big fan of Malzahn's, but it seems like a stretch to think the coach would leave Auburn. Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy has had a strong decade in Stillwater but doesn't have a great relationship with OSU brass these days, according to sources, so he might be tempted if Foley calls. Two wildcards to keep in mind for the Florida vacancy, both with Gator roots: Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops, who may be ready for a move from Norman after a decade-plus there, and Mississippi State's Dan Mullen, who is having a terrific season and is a sharp offensive mind. However, word is Foley's personality does not mesh well with Mullen's and it wasn't back when he was an Urban Meyer assistant.

Stoops has been at OU for 18 years. Somehow I just don't see him wanting to start over.

SOS has already said he won't be a candidate. He opined UF needs a younger HC who can stay 10 years or longer.
Dan Mullen isn't as bad as Lame Kitten, but he did thumb his nose at UF a bit after he left for Missy State. I don't think he's a favorite with Foley. However, I hope Foley doesn't let something like that rule out any good coach with experience.
I don't think Mark Stoops 2 years experience as HC at UK is good enough. I hope UF attracts an offensive minded coach. Mark Stoops' best experience has been on the defensive side of the ball.

Back a brinks truck up to Saban's house and pitch him that he could be the only coach in history to win NCs at three different SEC schools.

Unless a 2-win SEC season is something Flarder aspires to.

If I could get him, I'd take Gus Malzahn as my first choice.
Jeremy Foley wants an offensive minded HC with proven offensive experience. The ideal situation would be to have him by mid-December or before Christmas:

After suffering (and yawning) through four years of low-scoring games and offensive struggles under Will Muschamp, Florida fans are going to get what they want — a head football coach whose expertise is on offense.
That was the word from Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley during a news conference Monday, the day after Muschamp was fired following a second consecutive embarrassing loss in The Swamp.
“We may not have had the results the last couple of weeks in The Swamp that we all wanted,” Foley said. “I've been on the field and I've seen how hard those fans have worked to try and make us successful. It's an amazing place. I absolutely want to make this right for them, for this football program and this university.
“We'd obviously like an individual that's been successful on the offensive side of the ball. Obviously, that's what Gator Nation wants. We see that. And that's what we're going to provide for them. Make sure it's a fit for the University of Florida.
“What does that mean? This is not a place for everybody. Not everybody fits in here. As we go through the process (of hiring a new coach), we want to make sure he does fit in here.”
Along with being an offensive guy, the Gators' next coach also will have to have “high integrity and high character,” Foley said.
Foley said he would begin his search for a new coach Monday afternoon. Contrary to rumors and speculation already making their way across Twitter and other social media, Foley said he has not talked to any candidates yet.

Is that Foley's way of telling Petrino not to bother calling?

Not that UF would have him for your highlighted reasons, but I don't think Petrino would walk away from Louisville. They were the only big time school that would give him a chance. He's too thankful to leave that post again any time soon.

Two LBs Out For Season - Injured Against USC:
By Robbie Andreu Staff writer

Florida will be without two key linebackers for the final two games of the season, UF coach Will Muschamp said Monday.
Starter Neiron Ball and reserve and special teams starter Jarrad Davis both have undergone knee surgery after being injured in Saturday’s loss to South Carolina.
“Disappointed that Jarrad Davis had meniscus surgery this morning. He will be out for the season,” Muschamp said. “Neiron Ball had a meniscus surgery as well. He had to have a microfracture repair, so he’s going to be non-weight bearing for six weeks.”
Ball missed the 2011 season because of a rare condition that caused blood vessels in his brain to rupture. After recovering from brain surgery he was able to return to the field in 2012.

Mahlzahn isn't leaving Auburn. That would be a lateral move. Otoh, the east is an easier division Auburn isn't a lateral move. UF is a top 5 coaching school. AU is a second fiddle program in Alabama let alone nationally. Insofar as the East being an easier division is concerned, that isn't a big deal. Football is cyclical. What goes around comes around. Besides aTm and AU probably don't think the East is all that easy after getting whooped over the weekend.
