Jim McElwain named AFCA 2015 Regional Coach of the Year:
www.gatorzone.com/story.php?id=31886
University of Florida head football coach Jim McElwain has been named the 2015 AFCA FBS Region Two Coach of the year, the American Football Coaches Association announced on Monday morning.
In earning his second AFCA Regional Coach of the Year honor, Coach McElwain has guided the Florida Gators to a 10-3 record and their first SEC East Division Title since 2009. The former head coach at Colorado State took over the program in January after the Gators had finished 11-13 the past two years and led the Gators back into the national spotlight behind a superb defensive unit.
Coach McElwain won the same award last year at Colorado State after leading the Rams to a 10-2 record and a bowl appearance. The Gators head coach joins six other coaches who have won the award in two consecutive years at two different schools.

Michigan opened as a 4 point favorite. I suspect it'll be an evenly matched game even with Treon Harris at QB. Of course, I'm taking UF regardless of what the oddsmakers line on the game:
UF has played 5 currently ranked teams going 2-3. Michigan has played 4 currently ranked teams going 1-3.
UF's opponents winning percentage is 2% less than UM's opponents winning percentage, 56% to 54%.
Both teams play excellent defense, but UM has a higher scoring offense.
You just don't ever know how UM laying off a week longer than UF will affect the game.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida and Michigan, two of college football's traditional powers, opened the 2015 season with new head coaches.
Florida's Jim McElwain and Michigan's Jim Harbaugh don't know each other, but they have this in common: both have done superb jobs in their inaugural season.
McElwain took over a Florida program that was 11-13 the past two years and guided the Gators to a 10-3 record and their first appearance in the SEC Championship Game in six years. Meanwhile, Harbaugh returned to his alma mater and led Michigan to a 9-3 record, a four-game improvement from the previous year.
McElwain and Harbaugh will soon spend some time together when their teams meet in the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl on Jan. 1 in Orlando.
"I have a bunch of respect for what they've done,'' Harbaugh said of the Gators. "They have had a heck of a year. I feel like we drew the long straw on this one."
McElwain passed compliments back Harbaugh's way.
"I don't know Coach Harbaugh personally or anything like that," McElwain said. "But I've seen from afar what that guy has done and obviously the fantastic job he has done at his alma mater."
The schools have met twice previously, both Michigan wins in bowl games. They are scheduled to meet again in 2017 at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. Michigan finished 14th in the final College Football Playoff rankings on Sunday; Florida checked in at 19th coming off Saturday's 29-15 loss to No. 2-ranked Alabama in the SEC Championship Game.
Much like Florida, Michigan's defense carried the Wolverines for parts of the season. Michigan posted three consecutive shutouts during one stretch as former Gators defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin, who served as Florida's interim head coach last season in its Birmingham Bowl victory over East Carolina, helped Harbaugh transition back to the college game after coaching the San Francisco 49ers.
Durkin was named Maryland's new head coach last week and Harbaugh said Sunday that assistant Greg Mattison, a former Gators assistant under Urban Meyer, will serve as defensive coordinator for the Citrus Bowl.
The Wolverines did not play in a bowl last season and lost to Ohio State in the regular-season finale.
"They have worked extremely hard, they've competed well and they look forward to doing it again in this game,'' Harbaugh said. " That's why we're so excited about it."
Harbaugh was in Miami recruiting on Sunday and spent part of the day on the sideline with his brother, John Harbaugh, whose Baltimore Ravens team was on the road playing the Dolphins.
McElwain and his staff are focused on recruiting this week, too, as they try to build on the program's success in Year 1. McElwain became the first UF head coach to win 10 games in his first season.
Next up is his first bowl game in orange and blue.
"What a great honor for our team and how far we've come this year,'' McElwain said. "I know for our guys having the opportunity to play against such a storied program, it should be a lot of fun. This is one of those bowls that our guys really deserve to go to for what they have gone through this season."
McElwain hasn't had time to study Michigan on film yet, but he does have familiarity with Wolverines offensive coordinator Tim Drevno. They worked together at Montana State in the 1990s.
By the time these two programs open the 2017 season against each other in Texas, both could be among the country's best if McElwain and Harbaugh continue to make strides like they did this season.
For now, they provide the Citrus Bowl with an intriguing matchup.
"It speaks very well for the players on both sides,'' Harbaugh said. "They care about being good. We'll just keep moving at the same pace that they've been on."

Shouldn't say 'Steele and I'....?

Shouldn't say 'Steele and I'....? The way I worded it was over/under 7-5. I expected 7-5, but anything from 6-6 to 8-4 wouldn't have surprised me. To be sure, I was gladly wrong. At 10-2 before the SECCG, I was closer to being right than Phil Steele.
Phil Steele is one of the highest thought of professional prognosticators. He was way off base. He didn't have UF in his top 55. I'm not sure where he would have put UF had he ranked the 128 FBS teams. Several sites that ranked all 128 had UF at 65. Phil Steele claims credit in crowing fashion when he is right. That's how he makes his living. He deserves to be called out when he is so far off the actual result. I've enjoyed mocking Phil Steele as the season progressed. To be fair though, I cringed when I saw his preseason rankings as he is more often right than wrong.

Jim McElwain Named 2015 SEC Coach of the Year:
University of Florida head football coach Jim McElwain has been named the 2015 SEC Coach of the year, the league announced on Wednesday afternoon.
In earning his first SEC Coach of the Year honor, Coach McElwain has guided the Florida Gators to a 10-3 record and their first SEC East Division Title since 2009. McElwain is only the third first-year coach in SEC history to reach the SEC Championship game, joining LSU’s Les Miles (2005) and Auburn’s Gus Malzhan (2013).
The former head coach at Colorado State took over the program in January after the Gators had finished 11-13 the past two years and led the Gators back into the national spotlight behind a superb defensive unit. Coach McElwain is the first UF coach to earn the honor since Will Muschamp in 2012. The Gator football program has had six coaches win the award in its history.
Coach McElwain and the Florida Gators continue their season at the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl on Jan. 1. The Gators will face the Michigan Wolverines at 1 p.m. on ABC.

Five Gators make SEC 1st or 2nd all-conference teams:
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Five Florida Gators were named to the Coaches’ 2015 All-SEC First and Second Teams, the league announced on Monday afternoon. Three Gators were named to the First Team Defense, Jon Bullard as a defensive lineman, Vernon Hargreaves and Jalen Tabor as defensive backs. Antonio Morrison was tabbed to the Second Team Defense at linebacker and punter Johnny Townsend made the Second Team Special Teams list.
Bullard led the Gator defense in tackles for a loss and sacks during the season. The Shelby, N.C. native used 17.5 tackles for a loss to push opponents back 88 yards throughout the 2015 campaign, while also compiling six and a half sacks. Tabor led the Gators with 14 pass breakups, grabbing four interceptions along the way. Hargreaves matched Tabor with four interceptions and had 152 return yards for UF.
With 97 tackles this season, Morrison leads the Gator defensive unit with 56 of those tackles being unassisted. The Bellwood, Ill. native also contributed three quarterback hurries, one pass breakup and on forced fumble. Redshirt sophomore Townsend was instrumental to the Gators during the 2015 campaign. The Orlando native led the SEC in punting yards this year with 3,549 and an average of 44.4 yards per punt.
The Gators will continue the 2015 season with a trip to Orlando for the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl against the Michigan Wolverines set to take place on Jan. 1, 2016. The game will be broadcast on ABC at 1 p.m.

Jim McElwain Named 2015 SEC Coach of the Year: University of Florida head football coach Jim McElwain has been named the 2015 SEC Coach of the year, the league announced on Wednesday afternoon. 1. The Gators will face the Michigan Wolverines at 1 p.m. on ABC. UF SEC Coach of the Year Award Winners •1960-Ray Graves •1980-Charley Pell •1984-Galen Hall •1990-Steve Spurrier (First season as Florida head coach) •1991-Steve Spurrier •1994-Steve Spurrier •1995-Steve Spurrier •1996-Steve Spurrier •2012-Will Muschamp •2015-Jim McElwain (First season as Florida head coach) does this guarantee that mcelwain will eventually end up in columbia?
