Jim McElwain Named 2015 SEC Coach of the Year: University of Florida head football coach Jim McElwain has been named the 2015 SEC Coach of the year, the league announced on Wednesday afternoon. In earning his first SEC Coach of the Year honor, Coach McElwain has guided the Florida Gators to a 10-3 record and their first SEC East Division Title since 2009. McElwain is only the third first-year coach in SEC history to reach the SEC Championship game, joining LSU’s Les Miles (2005) and Auburn’s Gus Malzhan (2013). The former head coach at Colorado State took over the program in January after the Gators had finished 11-13 the past two years and led the Gators back into the national spotlight behind a superb defensive unit. Coach McElwain is the first UF coach to earn the honor since Will Muschamp in 2012. The Gator football program has had six coaches win the award in its history. Coach McElwain and the Florida Gators continue their season at the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl on Jan. 1. The Gators will face the Michigan Wolverines at 1 p.m. on ABC. UF SEC Coach of the Year Award Winners •1960-Ray Graves •1980-Charley Pell •1984-Galen Hall •1990-Steve Spurrier (First season as Florida head coach) •1991-Steve Spurrier •1994-Steve Spurrier •1995-Steve Spurrier •1996-Steve Spurrier •2012-Will Muschamp •2015-Jim McElwain (First season as Florida head coach) does this guarantee that mcelwain will eventually end up in columbia? I'd say he has more in common with Spurrier than Muschamp. That means 5 SEC coys in 7 seasons.

There are rumors out there that Treon Harris has requested a change of position from QB to CB or slot receiver so he can get himself ready for the NFL. That's a really novel idea. I wish I had thought of it. It won't happen until after the Citrus Bowl. When it happens OldGrayLady will go all black QBs matter over it.

You have a point. South Carolina has a way of taking UF retreads.

UF starts its first of 15 practices for the Citrus Bowl on 12/18. Seniors and juniors going pro will be excused from the first 3 practices. Mac said the focus on the underclassmen is a look to preparing for the future while extending rest and recovery time for the upperclassmen.
Will Grier will return to the team on January 5th to go through offseason conditioning with the team. He remains ineligible until game 7 against Mizzou in The Swamp. To me, Grier is a lock future NFLer. The Gators can't get him back soon enough for me.
My thoughts on UF QBs after the Citrus Bowl:
1. Treon Harris - moves to slot WR or CB if he has the hips to play the position. This is coming. If Harris resists the move, he may as well transfer.
2. Feleipe Franks - 16 class EE - I was ecstatic when he decommitted from LSU and committed to UF. He's going to be a good one.
3. Kyle Trask - 16 class EE - From a camp success to onfield success with UF during his career would be a compelling story line.
Note: I think Franks or Trask will redshirt, but not both.
4. Luke Del Rio - Luke may be the short term answer until Grier returns, but I think all Gators will be much happier come the Mizzou game when Grier become eligible again.
5. Will Grier - I'm thinking we UF fans got gipped out of enjoying a season of Grier's talents. I don't think Grier will need his senior season in 18 to get ready for the NFL. Grier should be in the NFL in 18.
6. Jake Allen comes in to UF with the 17 class.
The future at QB for UF looks bright. We just have to get through the first half of the 16 season with minimal damage to our record, mainly at Tennessee and LSU in The Swamp.

The kicking dentist hurt his leg practicing. He is done. We're down to Austin Hardin or nothing. I can't express how reassuring this news was today. (shaking head)
Alex McCalister is out for the bowl game.
Brandon Powell's foot is iffy. If they choose to operate, he's out.
Mac says everyone else is back and ready to go. I do wonder if that includes Thomas Holley and his chronic hip injury.
Mac slipped up and said the game against Michigan is a good trial run for a game coming up in the stadium after going to Dallas to play Michigan to open the 17 season. That means playing Miami in Orlando in 18 as I recall is set even though it hasn't been officially announced. As I said previously, I'd rather play an intersectional opponent instead of falling back into an undesirable game with the candy canes.

With the additions of QB Feleipe Franks and PK Eddy Pineiro, I consider the 16 class to be a sparkling success that is only going to get better. This from Gator Country on the commitment of PK Eddy Pineiro this evening:
Written by Andrew Spivey, December 15, 2015
The Florida Gators landed a big commitment on Tuesday as kicker Eddy Pineiro (6-1, 180, Miami, FL ASA College) committed to Florida over Alabama and others.
The JUCO star had been committed to Alabama since this past summer but backed off of his commitment on Monday night citing that he had sleepless nights due to his early decision to commit to Alabama.
Alabama hosted Pineiro over the week on an official visit but the Gators also hosted Pineiro and his family for an official visit during the weekend of the Florida State game and also hosted the kicker during the Vanderbilt weekend in November as well.
Pineiro, who has become internet sensation with his videos of him making long field goals, will fill a void at the kicker position that the Gators have had since Caleb Sturgis graduated three years ago.
The field goal kicking this year for the Gators was awful as Austin Hardin was just 5-of-14 and had three kicks blocked and that forced the Florida Gators to host open tryouts in the middle year, which came up unsuccessful as well.
Pineiro has never kicked in a football game but hopes to turn that around as the kicker is a soccer star turned football player that will have four years left to play in Gainesville.
Good news for Florida is that Pineiro will also enroll at Florida in January. He’ll be able to work on his kicking mechanics this spring in hopes of being ready to go in the fall for this Florida Gators football team.
With Pineiro’s announcement the Gators now have 26 commitments in the class of 2016 and could add more this week when linebacker David Reese makes his final decision on Friday.

From floridagators.com (formerly Gatorzone):
Gators Notebook: McElwain Announces 3 Signees, Including Top Kicker; Grier, Injury Updates
The Gators return to practice Friday to open preparation for Citrus Bowl
By Scott Carter, Senior Writer | Wednesday December 16, 2015
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida head coach Jim McElwain and his coaching staff returned home with the team following the loss to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game on Dec. 5.
The next day they hit the road to improve the team.
In the 10 days since, the Gators have added commitments from key recruits and perhaps most importantly, regained some footing on the recruiting trail that had been lost the last couple of seasons as the program endured more losses than wins.
McElwain announced three midyear junior-college signees earlier today: kicker Eddy Pineiro 6-1, 180), running back Mark Thompson (6-2, 230) and athlete Udreis Massey.
"We are really excited about the three additions to our program and to keep the momentum going forward with our organization," McElwain said. "We are looking forward to having them on campus for spring ball."
Pineiro was a big target for the Gators considering their kicking struggles in McElwain's first season. He is rated the nation's No. 1-ranked junior-college kicker from Miami (Fla.) ASA Junior College and chose the Gators over Alabama.
Meanwhile, Thompson signed with the Gators on Wednesday out of Dodge City (Kan.) Community College, where he rushed for 1,298 yards and 18 touchdowns this season. Thompson was named a second-team NJCAA All-American.
Massey signed with the Gators out of Holmes (Miss.) Community College. Massey, who is from Greenville, S.C., rushed for 452 yards and caught a team-high 21 for 548 yards (26.1 yards per catch) in his only season at Holmes.
McElwain was optimistic at the progress the Gators have made on the recruiting trail of late when he met with the local media on Tuesday.
"I thought we had great momentum, great headway as we're moving forward in this,'' McElwain said. "Obviously renewed interest and excitement about guys being Gators. That's what it's all about. We're really excited about that."
The coaching staff took Monday off following a grueling week on the road and returned to work Tuesday with an eye toward the New Year's Day matchup against Michigan in the Citrus Bowl.
The Gators return to practice Friday. Until then, McElwain wants the Gators to close out the fall semester strong in the classroom.
"As we head into this, this is finals week for us, which we need some guys to do well on that, as a lot of schools do,'' he said. "I know our guys are working their tails off for that."

GRIER UPDATE
Gators quarterback Will Grier remains on pace to rejoin the team after missing the final seven games. Grier was suspended for one year by the NCAA for testing positive for a banned performance-enhancing substance.
McElwain said Tuesday that Grier won't travel with the team to Orlando for the Citrus Bowl but is expected to rejoin the team for offseason workouts in January when the spring semester begins.
"He'll be ready to roll,'' McElwain said. "He's finishing up his finals now and everything from that standpoint."
Grier lost an appeal to have his suspension reduced and is not eligible to return to the field until Game 7 next season.
"It's tough on everybody. The poor guy, walking on campus ain't easy,'' McElwain said. "I just feel sick about it. Yeah, it's not easy, and yet when you learn things when they don't go well they really make you stronger.
"Look, you can sit and cry over it or you can move forward and make the best of it. That's one thing I think he's doing."
*****
INJURY UPDATE
Defensive lineman Alex McCalister (foot) and walk-on kicker Neil MacInnes (knee) are the only players McElwain ruled out of the Citrus Bowl on Tuesday. McCalister has missed the last three games and MacInnes, who joined the team midseason, suffered his injury at a recent workout.

QUOTE OF NOTE
"I didn't want to take a chance on him. He got dinged up there, and actually going into one game doing some things that we used him in practice, kind of pulled up again." -- McElwain on decision to move away from plan to use cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III on offense this season
QUOTE OF NOTE II
"Look, we're here to win a ballgame. We aren't here to just go on rides.'' – McElwain on his message to players for Citrus Bowl

First he screws the team and now he screws the program. Good luck to you Will. Don't let the door hit you in your butt on the way out:

Suspended Florida quarterback Will Grier has had a change of heart and will not be rejoining the team Jan. 5 after all. The redshirt freshman has decided to transfer, UF coach Jim McElwain confirmed Saturday.
Grier informed his teammates Friday night that he was leaving.
On Tuesday, McElwain said Grier, who was suspended for a year by the NCAA on Oct. 12, would be rejoining the Gators on Jan. 5 after having not practiced since his suspension for testing positive for a performance enhancing drug.
“Will came to me about exploring his options to transfer,” McElwain said on the program's Twitter account. “We will support him and help him in any way we can. This has been very difficult on him and obviously he is looking for a fresh start.
“We will always be there for him as will all Gators.”
As a transfer, Grier will be out of football for 18 months. He would not have been eligible to play again at UF until the Oct. 15 Missouri game in 2016.
Grier appealed his one-year suspension, but it was denied by the NCAA on Nov. 20.
With Grier leaving, the Gators will be down to four scholarship quarterbacks this spring, and two of them are true freshmen -- early enrollees Feleipe Franks and Kyle Trask. Treon Harris, the 2015 starter, will compete with Oregon State transfer Luke Del Rio and the two true freshmen for the starting role.

If Gator Country is right on the suspension information, Will Grier just reduced his remaining NCAA eligibility from 2 1/2 seasons to 1 1/2 seasons. This is taking on a look of maybe Grier was encouraged or forced to leave:
Written by Nick de la Torre, December 19, 2015
Florida Gators quarterback Will Grier will be transferring from the program GatorCountry has learned.
The transfer comes in the midst of a yearlong suspension for Grier due to failing a NCAA drug test for taking an over the counter supplement. The suspension, which began on October 12, would keep Grier from playing at Florida, or any Division-1 school until the seventh week of the 2016 season.
Head coach Jim McElwain recently stated that Grier would rejoin the team in practices and activities as early as January 5, following Florida’s bowl game against Michigan, however after news broke Saturday that Grier would transfer Florida released a statement from McElwain.
Will came to me about exploring his options to transfer. We will support him and help him in anyway we can,” the statement reads. “This has been very difficult on him and obviously he is looking for a fresh start. We will always be there for him as will all Gators.”
Grier retained attorney Clay Townsend to file an appeal of the suspension to the NCAA. Townsend and Grier were hoping to have the suspension reduced, allowing Grier to play at the beginning of the 2016 season, but that appeal was denied on November 20.
Grier has not practiced with the team since his suspension. The Gators were 5-0 when Grier started this season (6-0 overall) before Treon Harris led the team to a 4-3 record down the stretch. Grier completed 106-of-161 (65.8%) pass attempts for 1,204 yards and 10 touchdowns to just three interceptions before his suspension.
If Grier transfers to another Division I school he would be forced to sit out a season due to NCAA transfer rules and, from what Gator Country has gathered, would not be able to serve his current suspension for banned substances concurrently while sitting out as a transfer. Grier could transfer to a junior college to play right away, then return to a Division I school in 2017, sit out the first six games and then resume his career as a redshirt junior.
Kassidy Hill and Nick de la Torre contributed to this report.

I can only think he would go to a Div 2 school, so he doesn't sit out a whole year. Competition not as tough when he gets a chance to play in 6 games. Maybe the incoming QB's scared him a little ,and he didnt think he could compete with them. <shrug> Lets hope Franks lives up to the hype.

I agree, but Franks does start in January so things can change. The same goes for Kyle Trask. I'm hearing Trask has a stronger arm than Franks and both have mechanics that have to be worked on.
The last true freshman to start for UF was Chris Leak. Unless one of the freshmen steps up, it looks like Luke Del Rio by default. Even at that, I can't see both freshmen redshirting.
Treon Harris? Move him to slot WR or CB. If he doesn't agree with the move, he can transfer.
Another possibility is UF could pick up a graduate senior like FSU did with Golson. If nothing else, that would give UF experienced depth at QB or maybe a shared job with Del Rio which would allow UF to redshirt both freshmen QBs.

I read Trevor Knight or a kid from Louisville. Either of those would be a solid pick up.
