Florida coach Will Muschamp and his assistants continue to break down out-of-state recruiting barriers despite the 2013 season still hovering over their heads.
Their latest feat came Friday when Cleveland (Ohio) Benedictine linebacker Jerome Baker committed to UF.
The U.S. Army All-American and consensus top-100 overall recruit picked the Gators over Ohio State and Tennessee. He will be the first prospect from the state of Ohio to sign with UF since DeShawn Wynn in 2002.
“Florida is just the right school for me. It fit me and my personality,” Baker said. “I really just connected with the players, and I have a close relationship with coach D.J. Durkin. Visiting there (in April) was a great experience.”
Incoming freshman defensive lineman Gerald Willis III was the first Louisiana prep prospect signed by UF in more than a decade. Another Pelican State product — speedy slot receiver Derrick Dillon — is committed to Florida for 2015.
Last month the Gators picked up a 2015 pledge from California quarterback and Elite 11 camper Sheriron Jones. The last California recruit to choose UF was Ronald Powell five years ago.
Much like Florida assistant Derek Lewis, a Louisiana native who was responsible for Dillon and Willis, Durkin’s Ohio roots helped him land the 6-foot-1, 206-pound Baker.
“Out of all the coaches that recruited me, he made me feel the most comfortable,” Baker said of Durkin. “I can open up to him and talk about anything — life, football, whatever. He’s just a great person and a great position coach, too.”
The Gators’ 2015 class is now at 10 members, and their last three additions (Dillon, Jones, Baker) have been out-of-state pledges. Verbal commitments are not binding until prospects sign their national letters of intent.

After the events that occurred a few hours after this article was written, I would imagine Baker has had the first of many second thoughts about not staying "home". We'll see if this commitment sticks.

I can tell you with 100% assurance that UF, tOSU, and UT will continue to recruit Jerome Baker until his signed and faxed LOI is received by the school of his final choice.
UF wants to sign 4 LBs in the 15 class. Jerome is the first of the 4 LBs to commit. I consider UF to be the leader on the course.

If the chemistry is as good as the players are saying, this Gator team will compete at high levels. I love it when a team has outstanding chemistry. This from SEC Media Days in B'ham today:
SEC: Muschamp faces heat

HOOVER, Ala. — In terms of where Florida coach Will Muschamp is sitting heading into the 2014 season, it became official Monday, when he plopped himself down on the proverbial hot seat with the opening of SEC Media Days.
Or, in this case, maybe it can be referred to as the proverbial red-hot podium, where Muschamp stood in front of hundreds of media members from across the college football landscape and fielded some tough questions.
Like, how does it feel to be on the hot seat coming off a 4-8 season?
Muschamp didn’t flinch.
“That’s fine,” he said. “You combat that by having a good football team, which we’re going to have, and by winning games, which we’re going to do. I’ve got a lot of confidence in this team.
“Control the controllable is always what I’ve said. Control the things you can control. That’s coaching our football team, developing our football team.”
The preseason publications and prognosticators that have placed Muschamp on the possible firing line (and the Gators pretty far down the list of contenders in the impending SEC race) may not share Muschamp’s cheery opinion about the 2014 UF team, but he sounds convincing.
“I think we’re going to have an outstanding year, I really do,” he said. “I’m very confident in this football team and this staff. This is the most complete team we’ve had since I’ve been here from the standpoint of offense, defense and special teams.
“We’ve got some really good leaders, good players and we have an outstanding staff.”
On the biggest preseason stage in college football, Muschamp did not sound or carry himself like someone whose job is on the line this season. Like all coaches at this time of the year, when everyone is undefeated, Muschamp is feeling positive.
And there are things to feel positive about:
* Starting quarterback Jeff Driskel is back along with more than a dozen other players, many of them starters, who were sidelined by injuries last season.
* New offensive coordinator Kurt Roper has generated excitement (and hope) with his uptempo, spread offense that was so effective at Duke.
* And Muschamp has some sense of security knowing his boss, UF athletic director Jeremy Foley, has his back, just like he did last season when he gave Muschamp a strong vote of confidence. Foley’s opinion of his coach didn’t change even after the Gators lost to Georgia Southern at home late in the season.
Muschamp said Monday he never feared he would lose his job last season.
“There was never any time in my mind that I didn’t think I would be retained,” Muschamp said. “It’s the great thing about having an athletic director like Jeremy Foley that has a strong pulse on not only our program, but every program in the athletic department.
“At the end of the day, he understood circumstances we dealt with and looking forward to getting them amended this year.
“As a competitor, you want to get back out on the field, play as soon as you can. That’s why I’m really looking forward to getting to football and practicing and developing this football team.”
Standout sophomore cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III said the players have Muschamp’s back this season.
“I love my coach. I love Coach Muschamp,” Hargreaves said. “I love playing for him. There’s not much more to say other than the guys love to play for coach Muschamp.”
Junior Buck linebacker/defensive end Dante Fowler Jr. said he doesn’t like seeing Muschamp on the hot seat, and he wants him off.
“Our job is to keep our coaches safe, keep Gator Nation safe,” Fowler said. “We just want to win.”
Winning.
That’s what it’s going to take to get Muschamp off the hot seat and give him job security.
Everybody knows it. Now, it’s a matter of whether the Gators can win enough games for their head coach.
“Every year is different,” Driskel said. “Two years ago, Auburn didn’t have too good of a team, then they come back and win the SEC (last season).
“It’s such a fine line in the SEC between winning and losing. It’s going to come down to the end in a couple of games. I just think we have the players and the coaching staff to pull those games out.”
Fowler said there is a strong sense of confidence among the players.
“Everybody feels confident because everybody is working hard together as a team,” he said. “When you know your brother has your back, you really kind of feel unstoppable.
“I like the feeling around this team. Team chemistry is good. Everything is good.”

Robbies Playbook More motivation for Gators Thursday, July 17, 2014 at 12:09 by Robbie Andreu
If the Florida Gators were not already motivated by last season’s 4-8 debacle, they should be now after what happened at SEC Media Days on Thursday.
The Gators were shown almost no respect from the media when they were picked third in the Eastern Division and had just four players on the preseason All-SEC team, only two on the first team and none on the first two offensive teams.
Florida and its fans may be anticipating a big bounce-back season in 2014, but the media obviously doesn’t feel the same way about this team.
The only Gator offensive player mentioned on the preseason team was senior tackle Chaz Green, who is on the third team.
The UF defense did get some respect, with end Dante Fowler Jr. and cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III being named to the first team.
Based on the voting for the preseason team, the media apparently sees the Florida defense being solid and the offense being irrelevant heading into the season.
If that doesn’t motivate (and fire up), Jeff Driskel, Kurt Roper and all those other offensive players, nothing will.

If I had participated, I'd have had zero on the team from the Gator offense. I would have found a place for Jonathan Bullard on the defense. I'm also ok with third in the East going in. Again, show a better performance on the field where it counts.

I'm in the show me stage, but I like what ESPN's Tom Luginbill has to say about the Gator team and recruiting:
July 19th, 2014 11:09am
Luginbill likes potential of Florida’s 2015 class
by Zach Abolverdi
With the dead period now over, recruiting will begin to pickup for the Florida football program in the coming weeks.
Friday Nights Lights takes place July 25, and the start of fall training camp and football season next month will only bring more prospects to campus.
The Gators have 10 verbal commitments and 11 more scholarships available at this time, excluding walk-ons. Potential transfers and early departures could make room for around 25 signees.
The highest class ranking UF has from Rivals, Scout and 247Sports is 23rd. ESPN, however, is much higher on the Gators’ class. The four-letter network ranks them No. 14, and eight of their 10 pledges are ESPN300 members.
Florida’s last three commits (Derrick Dillon, Sheriron Jones and Jerome Baker) are big-time prospects in the eyes of every recruiting website. ESPN national recruiting director Tom Luginbill isn’t surprised by the recent additions.
“Here’s what people don’t understand: Florida is the type of program that has enough clout and established viability that one down year doesn’t alter their fortunes in recruiting, certainly not long term,” Florida said. “They resurrected the 2014 class in January when they added Jalen Tabor, Thomas Holley and some others, and that momentum I think kicked right into spring football. Then they get on the road, and there’s a lot of enthusiasm.
“You go and get a guy like Derrick Dillon who everybody is real high on. He’s an offensive weapon. I think they need to continue to add offensive firepower at skill positions, and I believe you’re going to see them go after some quality defensive ends. You’re going to lose Dante Fowler early to the NFL draft, so they have to continue reestablishing that depth.”
The Gators are currently considered the team to beat for four ESPN five-star recruits — wide receiver George Campbell, offensive tackle Martez Ivey and defensive ends Byron Cowart and CeCe Jefferson. They won’t be making their decisions anytime soon, but Luginbill thinks that could work out in Florida’s favor.
“You don’t want to lock everybody up too early,” he said. “It’s like having a big marlin on the line. If it’s 500 yards away, then you got all these sharks in the water trying to nip at it. So you want to take things down the stretch and be able to utilize official visit weekends in December and January. That’s not a bad thing because you can gain momentum in recruiting off of positive results on the field.
“I’m one people that thinks Florida will have a phenomenal year, and everybody’s been laughing at me. I think if they don’t get injured again from a talent standpoint, they’re going to have a season like they had two years ago with the new offense and a defense that’s going to be outstanding. All that’s going to do is help them close strong in recruiting, which could be pretty dangerous.”

As The Recruiting World Turns (chuckle):
UF safety commit flips to Georgia
By Zach Abolverdi Correspondent

Florida's longest-held verbal commitment for 2015 has flipped to a rival school.
Jacksonville Trinity Christian safety Deontai Williams switched his pledge to Georgia on Saturday, according to multiple reports.
Williams chose UF on Jan. 9 and was offered by the Bulldogs later that month. The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder is rated a three-star prospect by every recruiting website except ESPN, which has him ranked 192nd nationally.
The Gators now have nine members in their class. Verbal commitments are not binding until recruits sign their national letters of intent.

Verbal commitments are not, especially at this point in the year. They seem to get a bit more secure the closer to signing day but you still see a number of kids play games and do last minutes switches.

Robbie Andreau of the Sun breakdown of UF defensive line:
By Robbie Andreu Staff writer
Published: Sunday, July 20, 2014 at 7:00 a.m.
Last Modified: Saturday, July 19, 2014 at 6:55 p.m.
The upside The Gators have starting experience across the defensive front, led by junior Buck linebacker/end Dante Fowler Jr., whom many think will emerge as one of the nation’s elite defensive players in 2014. Fowler not only has great natural strength and athletic ability, he puts in the work to try and reach his potential. Heading into his true junior season, Fowler is looking to increase his production as a pass rusher. The Gators have another potential impact player at end, where junior Jonathan Bullard has played in 24 games, with 10 starts. Bullard also is capable of sliding inside and playing tackle, a position he played almost exclusively in the spring with UF down in numbers at DT. Bullard gives the Gators a third proven tackle, along with last year’s starters — seniors Leon Orr and Darious Cummings. Three young players — Buck linebacker Alex McCalister, end Bryan Cox Jr. and tackle Joey Ivie — showed real flashes in the spring and should see extensive playing time. The coaches think McCalister, who has bulked up to 250 pounds, has a chance to be a strong pass rusher.
The downside
There is almost zero proven depth at the two tackle positions. Bostwick and Brantley were highly rated recruits coming out of high school, but showed in the spring that they are still somewhat raw and inconsistent. The coaches are expecting Bostwick and Brantley to continue to progress. That’s the plan because they are going to be in the playing rotation in the fall. How much they play and spell the starters will depend on their development. The Gators also have only one proven pass rusher up front, Fowler, who will continue to see a lot of double teams unless another pass rusher emerges.
Young guy to watch
Even though he was not an early enrollee, Thomas Holley, a true freshman from Brooklyn, N.Y., has a chance to work his way into the playing rotation at tackle if he picks things up quickly in preseason camp. Also a standout basketball player in high school, Holley has the size, strength and athletic ability to be an early contributor.

Tim Tebow's home in Jacksonville - at $1.4 million for 6500+SF it seems like a good deal since it's on waterfront: nesn.com/playlist/tim-tebows-14m-mansion-features-luxurious-sundeck-billiard-room-photos/1/I really like the master bath shower. I'm not sure having the cooktop surrounded by brick instead of counter space is functional, but having an island counter directly across should help. I don't think a real cook would like it. I'm in to traditional brick housing. I like it a lot. Good for Tim. I am in the market for a new home and have been a looking at a lot of different styles, etc. The brick is very appealing to me, too and while I agree that the cooking area is a little weird, the kitchen as a whole is fantastic. Nice looking house for sure.
