Lots of talent to wear #50. Mike Stafford was a walk-on, got his chance to start his senior season. Mentioned that before the season on the old AOL football board....Evan thought if Stafford was the best RtG OSU had, the line would suck. He led the blocking to the right, took the MLB out, took the SS out off the boundary, Clarret scores his first TD of his frosh season. Broke his leg when he stepped into a gopher hole at Paul Brown Stadium on a kick-out block. Could have been the next Jim Lachey. The big fat slow f-word with huge cankles took his place, and the running game suffered a bit the rest of the year I remember that...and sure do miss the camaraderie & people we had posting back then... but in fairness, Ivan Douglass & Adrien Clarke weren't all that bad...they both got their shots...

LOL...I was going back & deleting more old posts with pix & ran across this gem from a couple years ago...some things never change... "Dude, why are you being a jerk? The discussion was Ohio and Auburn. Why do you keep bringing up Michigan? Did you lose a bundle on that 16 point spread? Your team won. Enjoy it... might not happen again for a while."Read more: aolcfboutcasts.proboards.com/thread/7120/ohio-state-buckeyes#ixzz4Eac4HDSa...at least our little scUMmer is consistent...& STILL dreaming, three years later.

A four-year letterman, noted for his assistance in the recruiting of the Brew Crew, beginning the resurgence of the O-Line as a force. Had he forgone his senior year, it was predicted he would have been the first center selected. After a poor senior year, he was an undrafted FA, and signed with the (relatively) home team Jaguars. He started his rookie year, but ended the season on injured reserve with a broken hand. The next year, he broke an ankle, and was eventually released. He then signed with the Dolphins, and is currently on the Saints taxi squad. After an outstanding HS career in Florida, he followed his big brother to Columbus. View AttachmentVernon Gholston, All America DE in 2007. He broke his hand in his first game against Miami (OH), and redshirted. His performance in 2006 earned him recognition as a 2nd team, All B1G Ten. In 2007, he set records with four sacks in a game (Wisconsin) and 14.5 sacks in a season, breaking Mike Vrabel's old record of 13. He declared for the draft, and lit up the combine, resulting in his selection in the first round, #6 overall, by the Jets. In three seasons with the Jets, he started five games, and never recorded a sack. He has since been signed and released by the Bears and Rams, and earlier this year, had a try out for the Redskins. View AttachmentJeff Davidson, All Big Ten G and team captain in 1989. He was a four-year letterman, and two-year starter. He followed his father and brother to Columbus, and he and his father became the first father-son duo to be named captains. He was drafted & played four years with the Broncos, moved to the Saints, & decided to retire after suffering a shoulder injury. After rehab attempts failed, he began coaching with the Saints, and is currently still coaching in the NFL as Offensive Line coach for the Chargers. Missed the beginning of his freshman year after an ankle injury suffered in a HS all star game, but came back & started the Cotton Bowl. Was a starter his soph year, but suffered a broken leg at Illinois in game four, ending his season. Also notable from above, Doug Datish was a four-year letterman and three year starter, selected as team captain and All Big Ten in 2006. Eric Gohlstin, three-year letterman, selected All Big Ten in 1997. Jacoby Boren, three-year letterman selected team captain in 2015. Still fresh in everyone's minds, no need to discuss the Boren story. And finally, William Henry Harrison (Tippy) Dye... WOW...I knew a little, but I'm just going to leave the Wiki link...too much to re-type, but what a great story... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tippy_Dye since the number 50 wraps up most of the slobs and interior guys that a lot of fans don't pay enough attention to during games, i just want to thank you again dale for publishing these lists of players from down thru the years. i feel quite fortunate to have had the good fortune of watching so many of these players since the mid-late 60s, and learning about many more. we are pretty lucky to have seen this program evolve and be so consistently successful. there are a ton of high quality 50's on that list. have to admit, though, that my first thought scanning them was how shocked i was that vern gohlston performed so poorly as a pro, after being so unstoppable on the college level. never would have guessed that. and thanks so much for referencing tippy dye. he was the last living member of the great francis schmidt era of the mid 30s. here is just a sampling of his accomplishments; - 3 yr starter for osu as a 5'7, 135 lb qb, when the bucks beat um 3 straight, not allowing a point in any of those 3 games. - he was a 3 sport star at osu, earning 8 letters in football, basketball and baseball - assistant fb coach at osu under paul brown, winning the mnc in '42 - served 3 years in the navy during ww2 - head basketball coach at osu from '47-'50, winning a big 10 title in his last season. he coached fred taylor on that '50 team, who would later become osu's head coach and win the program's only national title. - left osu to take the head hoops coaching job at washington. took huskies to the final 4 in '53... that program's only such appearance to date. - left uw to become athletic director at wichita state. - became athletic director at nebraska, hiring one bob devaney in 1961, who would take the huskers on their way to becoming a national football power - left unl to become athletic director at northwestern from 1967-74. - he was in the press box in '06, when troy smith matched his feat from the 30s, quarterbacking a 3rd straight win over um. ex-osu basketball star dick schnittker says dye and his wife had the hoops team over to their house for dinner once a year, not just to socialize but also to teach, sometimes things as basic as how and when to use which fork, which knife, etc, when dining out. he said he stayed in touch w/dye on a yearly basis, crediting him for being a teacher of living life with integrity. dye died in '12 at age 97

Mark and/or Marc: Are either of you active in the Alumni Club? Or something that has an ear in the university functions? Please let someone know that whatever they're paying to who ever to have the website maintained, they're getting ripped off. Trying to maneuver around the site and finding stuff is getting difficult. Either do it and do it right, or forget it... i'm a member but i'd be lying if i said i'm active. which site are you referring to?

The "OFFICIAL" site; www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/ I've only had minimal time with the other sports, but even those. Wrestling is not functional, half the links don't work. The football site if pretty half fast, from news to archives to something as simple as having list of players listed in alpha order.

in defense of evan, we all swing and miss sometimes when it comes to how we view talent on the field. Took me a while, but "fetching him up" on the football boards was a labor of love
