I'm not certain if I should be worried or excited. USC was picked to finish 3rd in their DIVISION !! in the Pac12. Given that they were picked to win the NC last season, I'm thinking that the underdog role might suit them better. Also, it gives you an idea of what the pundits think of a college football team with an untested newbie at QB. Not much.....

Phil Steele considers SC to be a dark horse candidate for the national championship. While I have a lot of respect for Steele, his predictions seem a bit off to me and not just on SC.
Walt, I think SC is looking down the barrel of an 8-4 season, maybe 9-3 with no serious injuries. Is that 3rd in the division?

I'm always suspicious of when an AD says a coach isn't on the hot seat and gives them a vote of confidence that the coach is on the hot seat: www.gatorsports.com/article/20130726/APS/1307260702I don't expect SC to make any changes during probation, but Pat Haden can't be pleased with the Kiffen era.

A lot depends on the development of the QB position, injuries and the continued development of the young D. They have talent, but none of it is tested. I can see Steele's idea, but everything would have to work out perfectly. That said, USC's schedule could put them 4-0 going into the ASU game, so perhaps that works out with some growing team maturity on both sides of the ball early in the season.

So, I'm reading about Fall practice, and USC's first scrimmage...and this is what I read about: Knee injury this, shoulder injury that, (Marquise Lee yesterday), coming back from surgery this, playing with "no contact" jersey because of injury that...on and on it went....and this is just the first week of practice.
With a shortage of scholarship players to start with, this season isn't looking too good so far....

Walt, with the 75/15 limits, it's not going to get back to normal for two more seasons, maybe a third to get the experience back up to full ship levels. Unfortunately, I've seen this road with UF back in the late 80s. However, a program like SC will bounce back quicker than most.

Kiffin decides not to decide. Dual QBs in the opener against Hawaii. I dunno if I like the sound of that. Word is that Kessler beat out Wittek on the field, but that Kiffin likes Wittek's size. IMO, dual QBs is never a good thing unless one is a changeup of the other. In this case, they both bring pretty much the same skill sets to the field. Hopefully, they've decided to decide AFTER a real game and this won't go on past one game.

Unfortunately, this is Hawaii we're talking about so it don't mean much. One thing is certain after this game. USC does not need to worry about a backup QB. We've got two of them. The OLine....holy shit, what a clusterfuck. USC is going nowhere unless the OLine play really, really, really improves. They totally sucked against an undersized, average D front 7 of Hawaii.

The front 7 on D once again showed some dominance of the LOS. Overall the D is shaping up to be a good unit. The O.....wooooo-boy.....As Lynyrd Skynrd put it, "...can't you smell that smell?" USC has no offense.

Steaksauce has himself convinced that Saban sandbagged and bama won't miss a beat starting 3 new OL. Walter, as you have seen, a deficient OL can sink an offense.

All three OL players had PT last season, they just weren't starters and hadn't played together yet. If I were a gator fan the last thing I'd be doing right now is criticizing anything about anybody else's offense other than your own. Besides, I don't think BAMA sandbagged. They just never needed to come out of their original game plan and they didn't have to show A&M anything.

I'll need to see a ucla win on the road against Huskers.
Nebraska is a very good team (IMO).
If that happens don't worry about SC.
ucla is the new King of Big Screen in the Southland!
it will come down to ucla vs. Oregon or Stanford in Pac Title game!
