No. Payola should have been stopped a long long time ago. Things have gone downhill ever since under the table cash was winked at and encouraged by college bigwigs
College athletes are supposed to be STUDENT athletes. Period. How many marching band members or field hockey players get NIL deals? Free college education is the only thing they are entitled to.
Next you will say that Arch Manning should have been paid NIL when he was in HIGH SCHOOL. His name is well-known enough to warrant it. What I’ll say is you’re right that the bigwigs are to blame for the mess. And I’ll ask you a simple question….why is a free education the only thing athletes are entitled to? Because it is the only thing that non-athletes on scholarship are entitled to. When have you seen a medical student or an animal husbandry student making commercials?

Yep. And they are definitely losing influence because of it. If the Big 10 & SEC are successful with the Power 2 concept i think they will eventually tell the NCAA to F off. Have already told them for the most part. NCAA is a toothless dinosaur. I read somewhere that whoever it is who heads up the NCAA is pleading with Congress to do something. I have no idea what he thinks the government could do to stop any of this, but it speaks to the complete loss of control over the whole thing by the NCAA and frankly, any respect that might still remain with both colleges and the public.

Athletes also get crutches, with free tutors that normal students don't get. They are also probably provided the test answers ahead of time like Kamala in a "debate."

The NCAA doesn't need Congress. That's like saying Bitem needs Congress to stop illegal immigration.
All the NCAA has to do is say "STOP, NOW! No payments from anyone to student athletes. If you change schools before 6 games have been played, you lose the next season of playing time. If you change schools AFTER 6 games have been played, you lose the next season of playing time, PLUS 1 year of scholarship money. IOW, if you are determined to change to Way Big U, after your current team has played 6 games, then you get to play your first season at Way Big U at your own expense after sitting out the previous season. You will be a walk-on who has to EARN that scholarship, just like a lot of these guys did:-----" www.ncaa.com/news/football/article/2023-09-09/17-best-walk-ons-college-football-historyThe NCAA is nothing but a big business money hog that lieberals claim to hate.

Charlie Baker is current NCAA President….he’s a good guy who was dealt a horrendous hand by his predecessors. Who were shortsighted as hell.

The Big Ten and SEC commissioners run big or organizations, but the overall health of sports is not their number one priority. Med and Vet students aren't governed by the NCAA, and they can't turn pro before they are licensed, either. So why should an athlete be allowed to turn "pro" while he is playing a collegiate sport?
If you like the idea, fine, but it is going to ruin CFB in the long run.
When a coach doesn't know for sure who will be playing for him and who will suddenly quit on him, how can he build a solid, repeatable program?
For the overall good of CFB, NIL is not a good move.

Bryan, I'm not the one who brought med students, vet students (and band members) into the discussion...you did that.
And FWIW, a med or vet student (or tuba player) does not need a license to shoot a commercial. Or do outside work in their field for pay, while on scholarship.
For the life of me, I've never been able to figure how one can give an athlete hundreds of thousands of dollars in the form of scholarship, room and board, medical care, free flights, etc. and then claim with a straight face that they are amateurs. But, give them $200 a month in spending money? Heaven forbid! Can't have that. It's nonsensical.
I'm fine with NIL, just not in the way it's done now which is basically anarchy. And for that, you can thank the idiots at the NCAA. They lost court case after court case, yet failed to do anything other than double down with more court cases. The NCAA could have implemented a system 40 or more years ago, but refused to do so.
As for coaches...they have been quitting on their programs and athletes for years, so color me a little jaded with the program building argument.

I remember Jimbo talking about couple of years back saying they have always paid the player it's just legal now. Strangely, back when I was in school, just as wheels were getting popular, the NCAA had rules, but AFAIK, never enforced them. Players had 'jobs' in the off-season, most of which they never bothered to even show up at, and gifts were....well....gifts. It wasn't even a secret. Players drove around school in those V8 'gifts'. UCLA built a dynasty in basketball, and good ol' Sam Gilbert wasn't bashful about telling people about his roll in building it. And I'm certain there were 'Sam Gilberts' all over America.
