Putin does NOT fear America's military as long as Bitem is POTUS.  Our current military commanders couldn't win a game of tiddlywinks.  He hasn't softened his stance on Ukraine in the least.

He softened his stance on Ukraine for one reason. Joe Biden kept sending weapons to the Ukrainians and forced it.
That will end in January when he will be given free rein to do whatever he wants in Ukraine without fear of his army getting the shit beat out of it by US armaments. Putin's top of the line tanks are getting taken out by comparatively lighter armed US Bradley APCs.

Many years ago Henry Kissinger wrote an article for Foreign Affairs magazine in which he analyzed all of the conflicts since WW II. His conclusion was that "creeping gradualism" is always a bad idea and leads to more conflict and more death. The only way to wage a conflict is to go "all in" from the very beginning. It's always a mistake to do otherwise. I think his analysis was correct. This creeping gradual escalation has only given Putin more time to reinforce and change tactics to meet each gradual escalation. Putin is a thug who is on par with Hitler. Do I think that if he were to win in Ukraine, will he eventually attack more former Soviet block nations like the Baltics or even Poland. Yes I do.

Putin has not softened on Ukraine at all.  In fact, he has started using North Korean troops to help his side.   There are reports of Iran, North Korea and China producing and supplying weapons systems to Russia for its war in Ukraine.  How does the U.S. plan to stop THAT, without going to war with those countries, too?

No one but Putin knows what he will do next.   Whatever it is, it won't be in Ukraine or the West's favor.

I doubt that even President Trump will be able to stop this conflict in a manner that satisfies both sides.

Seems like the notion of Russia beating the shit out of Ukraine in short order is belied by the fact that, here we are, a couple of years later, and Russia is needing new weapons and troops from geopolitical allies to fight the battle further.

FWIW, I heard a retired general discussing this. In his opinion Putin will never engage NATO knowing he'd be overwhelmed and stands zero chance of victory. He, the general doesn't want this as he feels Putin would go nuclear if backed into a corner.

What was the article? I'm a fan of FA Mag for 50 yrs. Actually killed my subscription last year, running out my reading time budget per week to include. Kissinger penned his first essay for FA in 1955 and has since written more than a few under his own pen or in concert w others. Thanks. I have an interest on reading about HK. Walter Isaacson's bio, published in '92 or so, is a good reflection about HK, though at 900 pages it's a challenging read.

In that book most note that HK was, above all, a pragmatist who believed that stability is the prime goal of diplomacy. Suggesting it is served when nations accept the legitimacy of the existing world order and when they act based on their national interests; it is threatened when nations embark on ideological or moral crusades. Also noting HK once said, “If I had to choose between justice and disorder, on the one hand, and injustice and order, on the other, I would always choose the latter.” I always thought that an odd position for a man raised in Nazi Germany who emigrated to the United States in 1938 as a Jewish refugee fleeing Nazi persecution.

I used to believe Putin was smart enough not to start a nuclear war. I'm not as certain these days. He may think he has more warheads and can withstand the millions of dead Russians it would cause.
