1 UF vs 16 UGALY next weekend in a best 2 of 3 super regional for a berth in the College World Series:
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The No. 1-seeded University of Florida softball team advanced to NCAA Super Regionals with an 8-0 run-rule victory over UCF in the Gainesville Regional Final Sunday at KSP Stadium. With the win, UF earned a Super Regional berth for ninth time in 10 seasons. The Gators (56-5) blanked UCF (38-22) for a second time this weekend behind Aleshia Ocasio's (22-1) three-hit shutout. Ocasio fanned seven and gave up just one walk in Sunday's showdown. After tossing 17 scoreless innings and outscoring three foes 24-0 this weekend, the Gators racked up three consecutive shutouts in regional play for the fourth time in school history (also: 2007, 2014, 2015), and for the 10th consecutive regional game since 2013. Once again, seniors Taylor Fuller and Aubree Munro provided a spark for the Gators at the bottom of the batting order to turn over the lineup and generate run production in Sunday's Regional Final. Fuller drove in the first two Florida runs, working a little two-out magic in the second. With bases loaded and two down, the third-baseman roped a two-run single through the left side to score a pair of seniors in Kirsti Merritt, who led off with a double, and Munro, who worked one of two base-on-balls for the Gators in the frame. The Gators got back to work in the fourth and put together a six-run stanza for the eight-run rule win. Florida took advantage of two hit-by-pitches and a Knights error when freshman Amanda Lorenz dropped a blooper in shallow center for UF's third run. A Merritt bases-loaded walk plated the fourth score and a sneaky Kelsey Stewart stole home on the same play to give the Gators a 5-0 advantage to set up a Nicole DeWitt three-run jack for the eight-run lead and final against UCF. Florida has won 12 straight NCAA Regional contests dating back to the 2013 season and will host the winner of the Athens Regional -- Georgia or Oklahoma State -- next weekend in Super Regional action.

Poodles end Gators season - no 3peat.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- In heartbreaking fashion, Georgia pinch hitter Kaylee Puailoa sent a two-run walk-off homer over the centerfield fence with two down in the bottom of the seventh to send the No. 16 seed Georgia Bulldogs (45-18) to their third WCWS. UGA defeated Florida 3-2 on Friday evening in front of a sellout crowd (2,041) at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium. It looked as if No. 1 seed Florida (56-7), leading the Bulldogs 2-1 from the fifth inning on, would force a decisive game three before Puailoa's heroics halted the season for the Gators. Georgia won the first game of the series on Thursday, 3-0, and needed one of the two possible games on Friday to advance. A solo home run in the bottom of the second for Georgia senior catcher Katie Browne put the first run of the game on the board for UGA, but Florida countered in the fifth to go up 2-1. Florida sophomore Aleshia Ocasio (22-2), who shouldered the loss in the circle for the Gators Friday, helped herself out offensively in the top of the fifth with a leadoff single through the right side, then moved to second on a groundout. Sophomore Nicole DeWitt's single to center gave the Gators runners on the corners before senior Aubree Munro was pegged in the first of back-to-back Chelsea Wilkinson hit-by-pitches to load the bases. Senior Taylore Fuller pushed Florida's first run across the dish with the second UGA HBP. Next up, an RBI ground out by Amanda Lorenz gave UF a 2-1 lead after five. After their best offensive inning in Super Regional play, Florida's defense followed in suit in the bottom of the fifth with its third three up, three down frame of the game. A Taylor Schwarz SportsCenter Top-10 worthy gem on a foul out over the first-base dugout net gave the Gators fire and momentum before Puailoa's stunner.

SEC coaches pick UF softball to 3peat as SEC Champion:
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – For the fourth consecutive season, the University of Florida softball program was selected as the preseason SEC favorite for the 2017 season. The SEC office announced the poll results Wednesday after a vote by the league's 13 head coaches.
The Gators, two-time defending SEC regular-season champions, have been picked as the favorite in the annual preseason poll since the league eliminated the divisional format at the conclusion of the 2013 season.
Florida, who returns all four 2016 NFCA All-Americans, earned nine first-place votes and accumulated 141 points. Auburn tallied a pair of first-place votes and 126 points meanwhile Alabama and LSU each followed with 118 points. Also, both LSU and Texas A&M received a first-place vote.
Last season the Gators opened the season with the best start in program history with a 33-1 record and finished the season with a 56-7 mark. A 20-4 record in conference play earned the program its sixth regular-season title – the six titles are the most by a program in the conference.
The team will take the field for the first time of the 2017 season on Friday, Feb. 10 in Tampa at the USF – Wilson DeMarini Classic against Illinois State. SEC play is scheduled to open up on March 11 at home inside Kelly Seashole Pressly Stadium against Missouri with the SEC tournament set for May 10-13 at the Sherri Parker Lee Stadium in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Let the games begin:
By Robbie Andreu Staff writer Published: Thursday, February 9, 2017 at 8:40 p.m. Last Modified: Thursday, February 9, 2017 at 8:40 p.m. After losing five of the best players in program history to graduation, Florida's softball lineup will look almost unrecognizable, at least early in the season. But that pitching, and those expectations, will certainly look and feel familiar. Facts Schedule What: Wilson DeMarini Classic
Where: USF Softball Stadium, Tampa
Friday: Florida vs. Illinois State, 4:15 p.m.
Saturday: Florida vs. St. John's, 10 a.m.; Florida vs. Michigan, 12:30 p.m.
Sunday: Florida vs. Delaware, 1:15 p.m.; Florida vs. South Florida, 4 p.m.
Radio: 92.1-FM/1230-AM, 100.1-FM/900-AM The No. 3 Gators are expected to win with dominant pitching. They are expecting to contend for a national championship. That's been the Florida way under Tim Walton. And that is not expected to change this season, despite all the freshmen and fresh faces who are taking over for the many big-name players who have moved on. “I don't have to explain what the expectations are at the University of Florida,” Walton said. “I think that they all understand that and they push each other for that. You have some players that really push and compete. “We have some World Series champions on this team and we have some high school champions on this team that never won at this level, but they understand what the expectations are and what it's going to take.” With 11 freshmen and sophomores and only three seniors on the roster, this certainly will be a different looking Florida team. UF must replace five senior stars who helped lead the Gators to back-to-back national championships in 2014-15 and provided so much leadership on and off the field in setting a new standard of excellence for the program. “When I look out on the field I'm missing the likes of Aubree Munro, Kelsey Stewart, Taylor Schwarz, Taylor Fuller and Kirsti Merritt,” Walton said. “Some of the best players we've had at their position in the history of softball at the University of Florida. For me, it's a little bit of a different expectation. “These are new players. They're new athletes and they can't be compared to those players. Those who are going to compare them to the players we lost are going to be very disappointed because they're not them. “We played the last three seasons with a bit of a target on our back. This definitely is a different feeling. This is a different team. We've got a lot of new faces and unproven players, but some good players who have already matured and developed well.” The departed five provided not only great production, but outstanding leadership. The new leaders are expected to be three of the returning veteran players — senior outfielder Justine McLean, junior first baseman Kayli Kvistad and sophomore outfielder Amanda Lorenz. They have been voted team captains for the season. “They're our named captains and the reason they are is because of what they do throughout the 6 a.m. runs, the lifting, on the field and in a locker room,” Walton said. “They bring a little bit of an edge to them.” With so many new faces in the batting lineup, there is an element of the unknown heading into the season as far as what kind of hitting team this is going to be. There is zero doubt about the pitching. The Gators probably have the strongest pitching staff in college softball. It features not one, not two, but three proven aces in Delanie Gourley, Aleshia Ocasio and Kelly Barnhill. And a fourth is primed to emerge this season — true freshman Katie Chronister, the former Gainesville High star (hitting and pitching). “I'm looking forward to giving this pitching staff the ball and seeing what they can do this season,” Walton said. “I'm really excited about what they've done and just how they've continued to grow and get better.” Last season, Gourley, Ocasio and Barnhill combined to win 56 games (against only seven losses) and strike out 538 batters in 471 innings. Gourley and Ocasio had ERA's of less than 1.00. As productive and proven as those three are, they're going to give up some innings to the true freshman. At GHS, Chronister was 48-4 with an ERA of less than 0.60 in her junior and senior seasons. She also hit .486 her senior year. “What makes this team special is how dynamic our pitching staff is,” Walton said. “We just do things so differently with four different arms. From the left side, from the right side. “I'm just excited about the overall quality of that depth.” The Gators certainly have a national championship caliber pitching staff. Now, will the young hitters produce enough to carry Florida back to the top? “We're the Gators,” Walton said. “The expectation when we recruited these plays is, 'What are you going to do to leave your mark to continue the legacy and the standard and the tradition we've built here at the University of Florida?' “ Walton said. “This is a team that's come here to continue the standard, continue the excellence.” Contact Robbie Andreu at 352-374-5022 or robbie.andreu@gvillesun.com. 2.10.2017
The softball season has begun. The Gators opened with a 9-0 5 inning run rule win over Illinois State. Delaney Gourley allowed 1 hit, no walks, and recorded 12 strikeouts:
TAMPA, Fla. – The No. 4-ranked University of Florida softball team opened the season with a five-inning shutout victory for the third consecutive season as the team cruised past Illinois State 9-0 Friday, Feb. 10, at the USF Softball Stadium.
Senior left-handed pitcher Delanie Gourley tossed her eighth career one-hitter in the effort against the Redbirds (0-3). The Lakeside, Calif. native was efficient as she recorded 12 strikeouts over 16 batters faced on the day.
Her performance in the circle set the tone for the competition and for the Florida offense.
The Gators (1-0) opened the scoring in the bottom of the initial inning of play thanks to back-to-back doubles from juniors Kayli Kvistad and Janell Wheaton. Kvistad, a 2016 second team NFCA All-American, ripped a shot to left center just under the outreached glove of Annie Heineman to score Amanda Lorenz and Nicole DeWitt, who both reached earlier in the inning via fielder's choice and a walk.
Wheaton followed up with a hard hit ball to right field in the next at-bat to score Kvistad and put the Gators ahead 3-0 over the Redbirds.
However, the big inning came in the bottom of the third where UF produced five runs. Kvistad led off the inning with a walk, which allowed freshman Jacqui Switzer to see her first collegiate action as a pinch runner. Wheaton picked right back up where she left off in the first inning and proceeded to hit a two-run home run to right field and push Switzer across home plate.
Senior Chelsea Herndon followed up Wheaton in the next at-bat with a solo home run, the fifth of her career. Freshman Jordan Roberts nearly made it three consecutive home runs with a double that hit off the top of the wall in right center field. Junior Aleshia Ocasio saw her first action of the season after she entered the game to pinch run for Roberts.
Later in the inning, freshman Jaimie Hoover produced her second straight walk of the game to put Gators on first and second. The duo executed a double steal with redshirt freshman Sophia Reynoso at the plate to put the Gators into scoring position.
Reynoso executed a sacrifice hit down to third base that scored Ocasio for her first collegiate RBI. Hoover later scored on an Illinois State passed ball that opened up an 8-0 lead.
The final run of the game came in the fourth on a bases loaded walk from pinch hitter Brooke Clemens that scored Kvistad.
Coaches Corner
On setting the tone early in the first game of the season:
"You know, you preach that to the team and Delanie just came out and set the tone for us right away and it was really just a good quick tempo. I thought we responded obviously with the three hits in a row but we really just got after it early."
Notables
Florida improves to 32-5 overall with its 13th consecutive opening day win.
Freshmen Jaimie Hoover and Jordan Roberts tallied their first collegiate hits.
Roberts hit a double in the third inning & Hoover singled in the fourth.
Gourley also threw the last one-hitter for the Gators, which occurred May 21, 2016 against UCF.
Herndon tied her career-high with a pair of hits. She ended the game going 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and RBI.
Reynoso made her first career start for the Gators at the shortstop position. She was expected to make her debut last season but redshirted last year due to injury.
Next Up
Florida takes on St. John's at 10 a.m. and follows up with a contest against No. 6 Michigan with a 12:30 p.m. scheduled start time. Daniel Gillman and and Kelsey Horton will have the call on WGGG (92.1 FM/1230 AM) & WMOP (100.1 FM/900 AM).

Kelly Barnhill pitched 7 innings allowing 1 run and Delaney Gourley relieved for the 8th-10th innings pitching a 3 inning shutout to pick up her second win (2-0).
Megan Betsa, Michigan's ace, pitched 10 innings allowing 2 runs in picking up the loss.
TAMPA, Fla. – The No. 4-ranked University of Florida softball team picked up a pair of quality victories over No. 6-ranked Michigan and St. John's on Saturday, Feb. 11 at the USF Softball Stadium. The team battled to a 5-2 victory over the Red Storm in the first game of the day then fought its way to a 2-1 win over the Wolverines in 10 innings.
The Gators (3-0) jumped out to lead first in each game today but found that it was going to be much tougher of a day than yesterday's opening day 9-0 victory over Illinois State.
No. 4 Florida – 2; No. 6 Michigan – 1
A three-player pitcher's duel gave the USF Softball Stadium capacity crowd all of the excitement they could handle in a game and more as the contest between two top 10 ranked programs went toe-to-toe for 10 total innings.
The combination of sophomore Kelly Barnhill and senior Delanie Gourley (2-0) gave Florida the depth and the edge to defeat Michigan's Megan Betsa. Barnhill tossed seven full innings before she handed the ball off to Gourley who tossed the remaining three; Betsa tossed all 10 for the Wolverines as she threw 190 pitches on the day.
Florida took the initial lead in the contest in the fourth inning of play when junior Nicole DeWitt sent through an RBI single up the middle of the Wolverines (2-1) infield to score Aleshia Ocasio.
However, Michigan responded in the bottom of the frame to tie the game on an infield RBI single by Aidan Falk. What most may or may not realize is that redshirt freshman shortstop Sophia Reynoso made a great play deep in the hole between her position and Ocasio at third, which prevented Kelly Christner from scoring a second run.
From that point forward, both teams battled back-and-forth to gain an advantage and Florida eventually took it in the top of the 10th inning on an RBI single into shallow center field. The hit scored DeWitt, who was placed on second at the beginning of the inning, and nearly plated Kayli Kvistad. Kvistad was called out on a bang-bang play at home on the throw from center field but the damage was done as the Gators took the lead 2-1.
No. 4 Florida – 5; St. John's - 2
Against St. John's (0-1), sophomore Amanda Lorenz struck first with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to score senior leadoff batter Justine McLean and put Florida ahead 2-0.
Aleshia Ocasio (1-0) and the Gators defense worked through the Red Storm's lineup only to give up a hit through the first four innings of play. However, St. John's railed in the fifth to post a pair of hits and two runs, which came when Gretchen Bowie hit an RBI single through the infield to score Marissa Rizzi while Hannah Anderson scored on the same play as she was awarded home plate after an interference call as she rounded third base.
The pressure was on until Ocasio stepped to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning. With Chelsea Herndon and Sophia Reynoso on base, the 2016 NFCA First Team All-American belted a three-run home run on a full-count to extend the Gators lead to 5-2. Ocasio finished the complete-game effort as she retired the Red Storm side in order.
Coaches Corner
On fighting through adversity in two tough games:
"I mean when you face two good pitchers that are mature, have been around the block and pitched well their entire careers. I thought both pitchers and both of our opponents made pretty good adjustments. We made some adjustments too and put good solid contact on the ball in a couple of situations but we still have to improve our overall mindset and not get too caught up in trying to do too many things or trying to do too much."
Notables:
The Gators won their third consecutive game against the Wolverines and now lead the all-time series 10-9 and have won 10 out of the last 12 meetings.
It was the third overall meeting between Florida and St. John's.
UF improved to 3-0 with the last two meetings occurring on Feb. 19, 2002
Amanda Lorenz and Aleshia Ocasio both hit their first home runs of the season.
Justine McLean tied her career-high with three hits in the contest against St. John's.
Previous career-high occurred on March 15, 2015 against USF.
This is the first win in an extra inning game since a 3-1 decision against Mississippi State on April 24, 2016.
The Gators improve to 78-34 in extra-inning games and 5-4 in 10 inning contests.
Only the second extra-inning game between the Wolverines: UF won 9-4 (8 innings) on Feb. 8, 2014 in Tampa.

TAMPA, Fla. – A pair of extraordinary efforts in the circle by Katie Chronister and Kelly Barnhill helped propel the No.4-ranked University of Florida softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Delaware and No.25 USF at the USF Softball Stadium Friday, Feb. 12.
Chronister and Barnhill both threw one-hitters in back-to-back games; it was Chronister's first collegiate start and Barnhill's third one-hitter of her career.
The Gators (5-0) wrapped up the USF Wilson-DeMarini Tournament on an offensive explosion as the team hit five home runs in the sweep of the Blue Hens (0-5) and Bulls (3-1). Sophomore Amanda Lorenz hit two, one in each game, while Jaimie Hoover, Nicole DeWitt and Sophia Reynoso each tallied one.
In the matchup against Delaware, Chronister was efficient as she threw a total of 55 pitches while walking one and striking out four. Delaware's lone hit of the game came in the second inning when Devon Steiner singled to center field. From there the Gators offense overpowered the Blue Hens hurlers en route to a 9-0 (5) victory.
Barnhill's third career one-hitter was nearly a perfect game as she struck out 12 of the 19 batters faced with zero walks. The lone hit came in the bottom of the fourth inning of play when Astin Donovan pushed a ball through the right side of the Florida infield.
Lorenz broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third inning with her three-run home run and pushed Florida's lead out to 5-0 with a double to left center field.
DeWitt ripped a two-run home run in the top of the sixth and Reynoso capped off the scoring with a home run over the high left field wall.
Coaches Corner On the biggest key to having success today: "The biggest key for me today was the one with the long ball. The ability for us to hit the ball out of the ballpark. It made a big difference - made scoring runs a lot easier - and I thought that was those huge for us."
On throwing back-to-back one-hitters: "The depth of our pitching staff and the looks we get from them are really phenomenal - and we made only one error on the weekend too. There were five games that we played really good defense, had good base running and pitched extraordinary well. I think that's a really good combination for a 5-0 sweep."
On how the young players performed this weekend: "There were some big moments and at the end of the day you definitely saw the youth but I saw the youth adjust and I thought that was huge."
Notables
Kelly Barnhill threw her third career one-hitter in a 8-0 (6) victory over No. 25/24 USF (Feb. 12, 2017). She struck out 12 batters and issued zero walks over 87 pitches.
Katie Chronister received her first career start and threw her first career one-hitter against Delaware (Feb. 12, 2017). She struck out four and issued one walk over 55 pitches in a 9-0 (5) victory.
Amanda Lorenz set a new career-high for RBIs after she drove in five runs against No. 25/24 USF (Feb. 12, 2017). Her previous career mark was four RBIs against Texas A&M (April 29, 2016)
Jaimie Hoover hit her first career home run, a grand slam, in the bottom of the second inning against Delaware (Feb. 12, 2017) in a 9-0 (5) victory.
Sophia Reynoso hit her first career home run in the top of the sixth inning against No. 25/24 USF (Feb. 12, 2017).

I was a little unsure of where we would go offensively to start the weekend but I just wanted to see who could step up and really perform at a level that is going to help us get wins. I thought everybody really performed at the same level they've been at and there weren't a whole lot of surprises for me this weekend. I thought everybody played pretty consistent." – Tim Walton
