Gators Prepare for Judi Garman Classic: floridagators.com/news/2018/2/28/softball-no-2-gators-prepare-for-judi-garman-classic.aspxAll of the games will be against interesting opponents and will give our California players a venue close to home for their families and friends, but the game of biggest significance will be against 8/9 ranked and unbeaten Baylor on Saturday. I don't expect the Bears to leave Fullerton unbeaten. Both the UF and the Louisiana Lafayette Ragin Cajuns will have good shots at beating Baylor. Looking at Baylor's schedule, they haven't yet been tested by any good teams. The Bears do get the advantage of it being UF's 5th and final game of the weekend while being only their second game. After UF plays DHs on Thursday and Friday, Baylor could have the pitching advantage on Saturday.

Thursday, Day 1 at Judi Garman Classic: floridagators.com/news/2018/3/1/softball-offense-explodes-for-no-2-gators-at-the-judi-garman-classic.aspxFlorida 13 Loyola Marymount 0 floridagators.com/boxscore.aspx?path=softball&id=13985Florida 10 Cal State Fullerton 0 floridagators.com/boxscore.aspx?path=softball&id=13986UF's record advanced to 18-1 with the two wins. Up Next: Charlotte on Friday night followed by Baylor on Saturday afternoon. In a schedule change at Judi Garman, the UF vs. Michigan State game was cancelled. The Gators will only be playing 4 games this weekend in Fullerton, California. The Gators pitching staff will be fresh for Charlotte and Baylor with Barnhill and Ocasio having pitched 4 innings each while Chronister and Lugo have pitched 1 inning each in the 5 inning run rule shutouts of Loyola Marymount and Cal State Fullerton. I wouldn't be too surprised to see Chronister/Lugo take Charlotte with Barnhill/Ocasio taking Baylor. If Tim Walton stays with the rotation, Ocasio would pitch against Charlotte and Barnhill would pitch against Baylor.

After the Michigan State and Charlotte were cancelled due to rain on Friday, Kelly Barnhill and Aleshia Ocasio combined to pitch a no hitter against #8/9 Baylor on Saturday in UF's 4-0 win: floridagators.com/news/2018/3/3/softball-no-2-gators-no-hit-no-8-bears.aspxBarnhill pitched 6 innings and Ocasio pitched 1 inning in relief. The Gators went 3-0 and unscored upon at Judi Garman. Next Up: Kentucky and the start of SEC play in Gainesville next weekend

#2 UF swept #22 UK over the weekend 6-0, 3-2, and 4-0.
In the Friday game, Kelly Barnhill pitched a 6-0 no hitter.
On Saturday, Aleshia Ocasio struck out 10 picking up the 3-2 win when the Gators rallied for 2 runs in a walk off bottom of the 7th inning.
On Sunday, Kelly Barnhill pitched a 4 hit 4-0 shutout.
UK has a nice team and UF was fortunate to rally for the Saturday win that enabled the sweep. It was UF's first seep of UK since 2015. Last year, UF took 2 of 3 in Lexington with the Wildcats winning the middle game as they almost did on Saturday.
Playing in the SEC is like playing a regional on most weekends. As of last week 11 of 13 SEC teams are ranked in the top 25.
The Gators next play in a weekend series at top 20 ranked Georgia.

The Gators went to a good Georgia team and lost the series 1-2.
Game 1: The poodles won 5-4 with a walkoff 2 run homer in the bottom of the 7th Game 2: The poodles stomped the Gators 11-1 in probably the worse loss I've seen since LSU did it about 3 seasons back Game 3: The Gators took the last game 5-1 ending the poodles long winning streak
The Gators rightfully dropped in the polls to #6, but Georgia is a darn good team this season being ranked #7 themselves. With the beating the poodles put on the Gators in game 2, I'd have ranked Georgia above UF.
UF came out on Wednesday night and smoked South Florida 9-0 with Nicole Dewitt hitting a 3 run walkoff homer in the bottom of the 5th.
Top 10 ranked Texas A&M is coming to Gainesville this weekend.

Game 2: #6 UF 10 #8 Texas A&M 0 - UF's record advanced to 26-3 (6-2). floridagators.com/news/2018/3/25/softball-dewitt-ocasio-lead-gators-past-no-8-aggies.aspxAleshia Ocasio pitched a 1 hit shutout. So far, the Gators have stomped on a very good aggies team, no contest. That 11-1 trouncing by the poodles at UGALY seems to have made the Gators hungry. Game 3: The Gators go for the sweep Monday night. The game will be televised by the SEC Network. Kelly Barnhill likely gets the ball tonight so it isn't getting any better for the aggies offense which has scored 1 run in two games at UF. Katie Chronister (soph) and Natlie Lugo (frosh) need time on the mound to develop, but not against a team as good as Texas A&M who would be slapping around pitchers of lesser quality than Barnhill and Ocasio. I hope they can get some pitching time in week break from SEC play as the SEC schedule is too important and hard to be throwing them out there to get slapped around. After Texas A&M tonight, UF is taking a week off from SEC play. The next 7 games: Wednesday DH vs. FIU Friday vs. Hampton Friday vs. Jacksonville Saturday vs. Hampton Saturday vs. Jacksonville Wednesday vs. UCF I'd give some of the next 7 games to Chronister and Lugo. Looking ahead UF plays two midweek game against highly ranked FSU and the rest of the schedule is against the SEC. This is the best opportunity to get the young pitchers much needed work in case they become needed later in the season. Barnhill can spend time working on her form as she has been called for too many illegal pitches, really hurt in the 5-4 loss against the poodles. Ocasio can get some much needed bullpen work as she is a utility player in the outfield when she is not pitching. JMHO, the next 7 games represent a win win opportunity for the experienced pitchers and the young pitchers. Chronister and Lugo would be needed if Barnhill or Ocasio were injured and out for any significant time.

Kelly Barnhill = SEC Pitcher of the Week: floridagators.com/news/2018/3/27/softball-barnhill-tabbed-sec-pitcher-of-the-week.aspxKelly picked up 3 wins in the last week. This during a time when she is adjusting her delivery so as to avoid illegal pitches. JMHO, she's only about 90% effective for what she can do until she is more comfortable with her delivery. She has had numerous illegal pitches as she was picking up her back foot in her delivery. Under rule, the back foot, the toe in this case, must drag the ground. Kelly's illegal pitches cost UF game 1 and the series at UGALY. The poodles are an excellent hitting team so they don't need strikes ruled balls that Kelly gave them. UF wins game 1 about like they won game 3, 5-1, instead of losing 5-4 on a poodle walkoff homer as the game wouldn't have come down to that opportunity for the poodles. I'm still thinking that the next 7 games while off from SEC play is a good time to get some developmental experience for soph Katie Chronister and frosh Natlie Lugo. Everybody already knows what Kelly Barnhill and Aleshia Ocasio bring to the pitchers circle.

3.28.2018 UF split the DH with FIU: floridagators.com/news/2018/3/28/softball-ocasio-throws-no-no-in-doubleheader-split-with-panthers.aspxGame 1: Aleshia Ocasio pitched a 9-0 no hitter. Game 2: FIU blanked UF 5-0. Katie Chronister was disappointing allowing 3 runs in the 1st before walking the first batter of the second. Natalie Lugo relieved for the 2nd through the 7th promptly allowing 2 runs, the runner at 1st was charged to Chronister, in the 2nd before settling down to shutout FIU the rest of the way. The Gators offense went dormant. Amanda Lorenz said it simply and best that FIU outplayed the Gators in game 2. JMHO, the offense played the game like it was a throw away game. Regardless of the loss, I endorse pitching Chronister and Lugo. It was important to see that at least Natalie Lugo can be counted upon if she were needed. I was disappointed in what I saw from Katie Chronister. Tim Walton looked impatient when he lifted Chronister after the walk on the heels of her bad 1st inning. Natalie Lugo as a true freshman showed pitching skills that Katie Chronister doesn't seem to have as a sophomore. If either Barnhill or Ocasio were sick or injured, I think Lugo would be tapped to pitch.

Aleshia Ocasio and Natlie Lugo combined for a 15 up and 15 down 18-0 perfect game against overmatched Hampton out of the MEAC: floridagators.com/news/2018/3/30/softball-ocasio-lugo-combine-for-perfect-game-against-hampton.aspxNatlie Lugo pitched the 4th and 5th. She struck out two batters. Natlie looks like she has good stuff and can be counted on to pitch this season if needed. Game 2 with Jacksonville is tied 1-1 in the top of the 5th with 1 out and a 2-2 count when the heavy rain came. The game will be finished tomorrow after UF beats Hampton again and before the scheduled game against Jacksonville. Barnhill gave up 1 hit, a solo homerun in the top of the 3rd. The Gators had two hits, scored their run in the bottom of the 4th, and was looking to seize control after establishing momentum when the rain came. I expect the Gators to sweep Hampton and sweep Jacksonville on Saturday. I'd be surprised if UF doesn't finish up 5-1 in the home stand this week with that lone 5-0 loss to FIU when the Gators played so poorly being out pitched, out hit, out defensed, and out coached after blowing FIU out 9-0 in a no hitter in the early game. The Gators could play down to the competition again, but I don't think they will.

UF 7 Hampton 0 - True freshman Natalie Lugo pitched the complete game 3 hit shutout.
UF 2 Jacksonville 1 - Completion game from the Friday rain postponement.
UF vs. Jacksonville - Kelly Barnhill is on the mound with UF in search of their 33rd win. So far, the plate ump isn't giving low strikes.

Write up on the Saturday games: floridagators.com/news/2018/3/31/softball-no-4-gators-earn-three-victories-to-close-out-weekend.aspxTim Walton had good things to say about freshman Natalie Lugo. This is a good development for the rest of the Gators season and into next season when Lugo replaces Ocasio who is graduating to work with Katie Barnhill in the 19 rotation. The mid week loss to FIU was absolutely worth it as we now know Lugo can be counted on when needed. Sophomore Katie Chronister has been passed over by freshman Lugo. After what I saw from Chronister on Wednesday, I don't know if she can develop to the level required to be in the starting pitching rotation with UF. I hope Katie proves me wrong, but that is what completion on the team is all about. The cream must rise to the top to play at UF. UF's record advanced to 32-4. Next up: at UCF in mid week followed by at Alabama next weekend.

4.4.2018 The 24-13 (5-1 AAC) UCF Knights will have an overflowing home crowd for the Gators tonight: ucfknights.com/news/2018/4/3/softball-fixed-for-florida.aspxThe game will be at 6 PM ET. UF has played in aroused environments at Louisiana Lafayette and at Georgia. I doubt the Gators will be affected by the UCF home field advantage. The game should be a good tune up for playing at Alabama this coming weekend. The Gators played down to their competition in the off week from SEC play so it will be good to get them back on the field against a good team that can challenge them to get better.
