The view from 126 at the Bryce Jordan center...
It's a shame the psu crowd doesn't support nitt hoops more. Beautiful facility, but the entire upper deck is closed off, the bottom is 67% filled, maybe, with 500+ of them Osu fans, surprisingly.
Finally the Bucks get off to a quick start on the road, up 15-8. We made 7-13 from the field in that stretch. It would take us 24 more shots to make another 7 fg's. Psu scored the first 4 buckets of the 2nd half to go up 38-29, and you wondered if this was going to be another Michigan game. Then deangelo Russell got hot. 19 pts in the 2nd half, including 4-5 from 3-land. 28 for the game. Tate carried us w 11 pts early, Scott had another nice game w 13, I think Osu shot around 55% in the 2nd half. We went from 9 down to up 15 in about 10 minutes. Still can't make ft's... Barely 50% on 30+ attempts. That wont fly vs good teams. But any road win = good road win this year. Bucks now in 4-way tie for 3rd. Still need both a win over Wisconsin Sunday and some help to get the double bye.
Also tonites win equals matta with Fred Taylor for all time wins at Osu. 2 classy teaching pros.

Late in the first half on the press Sam Thompson was guarding the in bounds pass and tipped it up in the air, high off the backboard and thru for 2. First time I've ever seen that. More notable WS the fact that, although matta started Amir Williams's at center, trey McDonald played twice as much, I think. Amir looked sluggish early, again. And clumsy around the bucket in the 2nd half, again. Trey is even more limited offensively, but brings a ton more energy to his defense and rebounding. Will be interesting to see if that becomes a trend vs kaminsky sunday. If lee is finally healed from that groin injury, Amir may be the 3rd option at the 5 spot.

Great trip down memory lane. One of the more dramatic moments in Buckeyes sports over the past couple decades. bucks did not lead that entire afternoon until sylvester's shot in the final seconds. and w/osu serving probation for o'brien's transgressions paying for a serbian kid's funeral (amongst other things), that game at the end of matta's first season meant even more. back in the present day, there aren't many coaches i have less time for than tom crean at iu... just not a fan of how he carries himself... but it sure would help the bucks out a lot if those stinkin hoosiers can knock off msu today. osu is in a 4 way tie for 3rd in the league w/iowa, sparty and purdue, and we lose tiebreakers w/the hawkeyes (who should pummel n'western today) and izzo when it comes to finishing in the league's top 4 re big 10 tourney. boilers host the illini later today, and as i type msu and iu are tied at 27 late in the first half. of course, this also assumes we beat uw, which is obviously no sure thing. them clinching the league (congrats to the badgers) thursday night, especially vs an arch rival (minnesota) might be worth an extra bucket or two for us. lee being healthy enough to play would help, a lot, giving us 3 bigs to rotate on kaminsky. hayes, dekker, et al can hurt you too, but i'll take my chances w/them if we can slow down the poy. the schott should be at/near capacity for senior day, and should be rockin. iu-msu 34 all at half.

Chance to cut it to 7 with a three and they fall apart immediately after. Wisconsin is good but man, this team is tough to watch. Zero flow to the offense will lead to a quick stay in the tournament(s).

Chance to cut it to 7 with a three and they fall apart immediately after. Wisconsin is good but man, this team is tough to watch. Zero flow to the offense will lead to a quick stay in the tournament(s). The view from 118... Well, I came away more impressed with Wisconsin than I thought I would. Their staring five has great balance on the floor. Both kaminsky and Hayes can handle the ball and shoot from the perimeter (knew kaminsky could, but Hayes also drained a 3 today), they're long and move well. When Osu made its run in the 2nd half to finally make it a game, it was Koenig (sp?) who re-ignited uw, both from the outside and on drives sparking that 16-0 run to put the game away. I heard driving home that Ryan called this the best game they've played all year. If so I hope they can bottle it because the Badgers can go deep into March with this team. As for the bucks? Where do you start? We started the game shooting 3-15, while uw shot 50%+ the entire game. Sammy played not just the worst game of the year, but maybe the worst of his career. I think matta going with Tate on kaminsky was a mistake. Too much of a size difference. He didn't put Amir on him at all, and switched McDonald on him only when it was too late. And our bench was, in a word, non-existent. Til bates-diop got a meaningless bucket near the end, our subs contributed a big old goose egg, while uw's bench put up 16 I believe. Scott played well. Russell did ok but the team was relying way too much on him. Tate hustled and got some effort points. But we still shot only 35%. You can't win doing that. Amir and trey scored a combined 4 Points. Unacceptable. I don't know what happened to loving during his supension, but since returning he's looked almost paraplegic on the floor. Tough to see this team winning more than one game in either the league or ncaa tourney unless our bigs start doing more acceptable things on the court.

They are Ohio's Traevon Jackson short of making the final 4, imo. He's a missing link with his veteran court savvy. Their first 5 plays, as a team, as well as anyone. We'll see.

Read where he's expected back by the NCAA. Will still need to get back into playing form but that will definitely help depth. Gasser and Koenig did a nice job Sunday. Russell had 17, about his norm, but it took 18 shots to get it. Give gasser credit for some of that.

media and coaches aren't always the smartest when it comes to assessing talent, but their votes on the big 10 awards were telling when it comes to osu. d'angelo russell made 1st team all league, 1st team on the all-freshmen team, and was freshman of the year, in addition to finishing 2nd in the poy voting behind kaminsky.
jae'sean tate was also on the all-frosh team. no other buckeye made any of the top 3 teams in either the media or coaches' votes. scott and thompson made honorable mention on the media team. the coaches didn't reward any other buckeyes. it has been a long time, a very long time, since that happened. and no osu player made the all-defensive team (first time in 6 years); i do disagree w/that... i think scott was very deserving again this year (he'd made it each of the past 2 years, playing less minutes).

the view from the den... the 2nd half showed osu's dr jekyll/mr hyde personality of this year. a great start in the first 10:00 to go up 61-48, and then, like we seem to do in every game, the guys stopped looking for open shots assertively and we went 5:00 w/o a bucket and let the gophers back in it, eventually cutting it to 2 before the bucks put it away 79-73. the guy that thad matta saw down in alpharetta, ga? the one that he knew was better than trey burke? 3 years late, but he showed it tonight. shannon scott was outstanding; 21 pts (career high), 6 assists, 5 rebounds and a steal. shot 7-12 from the field, 6-6 from the line. better late than never... just keep it up this weekend and next. russell started slow (missed his first 6 3's) then finished strong (made 3 of his next 4) on his way to 23 pts. also had 5 bounds and 4 assts, but he also had 5 turnovers. that's not good. welcome back loving. we missed you. 12 pts, 5-8 on fg and 5 rebounds. for the first time since january he looked like he belonged on the floor. his presence opens up the middle w/russell on the floor w/2 long range shooters. a must to beat msu and make a run in march. we shot 50%... 26-52... first time in ages it seems. and had 17 assists... ball movement was much better. outrebounded minnesota 35-28 (sammy had 7 along w/9 pts to come back some from that awful game w/the badgers). and we shot 78% from the line, 22-28. yes it was minnesota, who has above average guards but not much else, but nothing builds confidence like seeing the ball go in the basket. sparty is beatable. terps are playing better but knowing we drilled them by 24 earlier is a plus. and uw should be waiting. no problem.

Got tied up late in the afternoon, and then forgot the game was on...especially now that we're back to a three hour difference... Since it wasn't at home as well, was there any recognition of Thad Matta passing Fred Taylor as OSU's winningest coach? Add to that, winning % at OSU is .763; one of only 5 teams to reach 21 wins in each of the past 10 seasons, along with Duke, Kansas, Gonzaga, and Akron; Matta is now #5 among active coaching in winning %. Who was it that was wanting a coaching change?
