the view from the den... the 2nd half showed osu's dr jekyll/mr hyde personality of this year. a great start in the first 10:00 to go up 61-48, and then, like we seem to do in every game, the guys stopped looking for open shots assertively and we went 5:00 w/o a bucket and let the gophers back in it, eventually cutting it to 2 before the bucks put it away 79-73. the guy that thad matta saw down in alpharetta, ga? the one that he knew was better than trey burke? 3 years late, but he showed it tonight. shannon scott was outstanding; 21 pts (career high), 6 assists, 5 rebounds and a steal. shot 7-12 from the field, 6-6 from the line. better late than never... just keep it up this weekend and next. russell started slow (missed his first 6 3's) then finished strong (made 3 of his next 4) on his way to 23 pts. also had 5 bounds and 4 assts, but he also had 5 turnovers. that's not good. welcome back loving. we missed you. 12 pts, 5-8 on fg and 5 rebounds. for the first time since january he looked like he belonged on the floor. his presence opens up the middle w/russell on the floor w/2 long range shooters. a must to beat msu and make a run in march. we shot 50%... 26-52... first time in ages it seems. and had 17 assists... ball movement was much better. outrebounded minnesota 35-28 (sammy had 7 along w/9 pts to come back some from that awful game w/the badgers). and we shot 78% from the line, 22-28. yes it was minnesota, who has above average guards but not much else, but nothing builds confidence like seeing the ball go in the basket. sparty is beatable. terps are playing better but knowing we drilled them by 24 earlier is a plus. and uw should be waiting. no problem. Got tied up late in the afternoon, and then forgot the game was on...especially now that we're back to a three hour difference... Since it wasn't at home as well, was there any recognition of Thad Matta passing Fred Taylor as OSU's winningest coach? Add to that, winning % at OSU is .763; one of only 5 teams to reach 21 wins in each of the past 10 seasons, along with Duke, Kansas, Gonzaga, and Akron; Matta is now #5 among active coaching in winning %. Who was it that was wanting a coaching change?
mike tirico (one of my faves and i think one of the best on tv right now) mentioned it a few times during the game, and i know the players had a t-shirt made w/'298' on it and gave it to matta after the game. another kudo for thad; since he began in '05, osu has gone 22-6 in the big 10 tourney, winning it 4 times and finishing 2nd 3 times. plus he's made 8 ncaa's in 10 years (one of the misses was his first when osu was being punished for the o'brien crap), going 17-8 w/2 final 4's, 3 elite 8's, 5 sweet 16's. only thing missing is that final win. it's a record all but about 10 schools in the country would envy right now over the last decade.

the view from the r bar...
was at the jackets game last night so i only caught the last 5:00 of the first half on... even when osu made a couple runs in the 2nd half to get within 5, you never felt like they were going to take over the game. our interior defense was an absolute sieve... so many easy put backs, lay ups, dunks, and shot within a few feet of the hoops. once again, we got out of the gate shooting poorly; even w/a flurry at the end of the half we were barely over 30%. msu isn't that tall this year, but dawson and valentine are bulky and we struggled with them both. and, again, in the 2nd half we had a 5-6:00 stretch where we couldn't buy a bucket, and a 5 point lead becomes a 17 point hold. just too much to overcome.
amir played just 13:00 and had just 1 rebound. 1. he did score 7 points, which is borderline amazing. mcdonald was much more active, getting 8 boards in 19 min. but loving did not follow up his good play vs minnesota w/a good game last night. just 1 bucket and 1 board in 22:00. not a good sign. plus sammy didn' have a good shooting night. nobody really shot well, and grinding out victories vs an izzo team isn't easy. i think scott is playing the best of his career right now... he looked good again; 13 pts, 5 rebounds, 9 assists, 2 steals, 3-6 on 3's. that's encouraging. russell actually looked a little tired to me... maybe it was the labatts blue i was drinking. lol so osu misses the semis of the big 10 tourney for the first time since '08.
so... likely an 8 seed somewhere. a win (no sure thing this year) means a 2nd round game vs a kentucky, villanova, duke, uva. tall order for this group.

I was floored Ohio St is a 10 seed. Super shocked plus when you see Indiana was a 10 and some other seeds I was thinking a 6 or 7 seed. Couldn't have asked for a tougher match up, IMO. VCU is beatable but the way Ohio St has played this year I'm more thinking of them getting run out of they gym.

Thats great for Russell and wish him well___just wished that he didnt turn into William Buford vs Arizona Definitely not the way you want to see a career end, that is if you can really call one year a career. He did other things to help keep them in it for awhile but when a team that struggles on offense has that kind of performance by their primary scorer, the results usually aren't good.

Thats great for Russell and wish him well___just wished that he didnt turn into William Buford vs Arizona Buford was 2 of 17, Russell was 3 of 17.......makes him 33.3% better.........sheesh what a game to have a serious case of "pro-itis"

Whatever it was that happened with Loving, it seemed DAR must have been involved, or at least approved of the 'suspension.' Even when he was obviously struggling, and Loving was open and had hit a couple shots, Russell ignored him and forced shots. I doubt Loving will be back next year either.

1. ua was the better team, and proved it. we really did a good job on their bigs early but their guards killed us in the 2nd half. 2. did a.j. mccarran (sp?) remind anyone of craft, down to his #4? my wife said that 3:00 into the game, that 'he's scrappy like aaron'. he kept the wildcats afloat til they hit stride and york started hitting 3's. 3. osu's faults yesterday were consistent w/their problems all season; we were not a tough team when it came to rebounding, per usual, and if russell isn't scoring, we don't have anyone who consistently backed him up. d'angelo just had a horrible shooting game (3-19), he wasn't getting calls to get to the line, and no one else stepped up. sammy's 18 points were deceptive, because 8 of them came in the last 2:00 when 'zona already was leading by nearly 20. 4. matta's team never reach expectations this year, and this squad loses thompson, scott (who really came on in the last month), amir williams and mcdonald, as well as russell most likely. but i'm excited about next year. this incoming class is thad's best since the oden/conley/cook/lighty/hunter from '06-'07.

BUT, THAT's why they play the games... congrats to uw... they had the toughest road to indy and got there. on the flip side, msu probably had the easiest route. that said, this has to be izzo's greatest coaching job in his career... i know i didn't expect to see sparty still standing for the final weekend of the season.
