I read on other boards that the Bucks are ranked #20 in the pre-season, and picked to finish 3rd in the B1G...

coach matta seems pretty happy about his top 10 (rated anywhere from 7th to 9th) recruiting class for '15, and it seems to fit what osu is needing; 6'5 austin grandstaff out of texas is a pure shooter that matta says is a better shooter than jon diebler, which is tall praise; 6'7 mickey mitchell (also out of tx) who can play anywhere from the 1 to the 4 (he's had back and knee injuries the last 2 yrs, though, so not a sure thing physically); 5'9 pg a.j. harris out of dayton dunbar (i've seen this kid play a couple times... lightning quick and a very good ball handler); and 6'10 daniel giddens out of ga, a shot blocker/defender who is at oak hill academy down in va, to try and continue to fill the void we've had down low in terms of depth.
will be going to osu's opener tomorrow night vs u-mass lowell, looking forward to seeing d'angelo russell, whether as a frosh he can inject some life into the offensive end of the floor, to compliment thompson, scott, williams, et al.

thpughts after seeing osu's first 2 games vs umass-lowell and marquette...
a little skewed because neither team had a starter taller than 6'7, and umass-lowell was not very good. that said, this young (very young) squad seemed to have a little more energy/zip on offense. we'll see if that holds up when they play l;ville, unc and the league schedule, but that was encouraging. russell i like a lot. smooth shooting stroke, moves well on the floor. has the potential to be a pg although he was sloppy last night. kam williams is also showing lots of potential on the floor. outside shot and can take it to the rim. those 2 will spread a defense enough to make loving and thompson and even williams more effective w/the ball. nowhere is that more evident than in the stat sheet for shannon scott, who had 11 assists vs lowell and 14 last night. it looks like there are more scoring options this year, and that is a welcome change. at the 3:38 mark of the first half last night, we were 12-18 from the field (that didn't happen much last year), and 7-10 on 3 pointers (that NEVER happened last year-lol). this team appears to have the speed to beat defenders down the floor, and the shooting touch to beat them when they don't (shot 32-49 for the game last night). that's promising. also 10 players played at least 10 minutes... you hope that kind of deep bench keeps developing as the season progresses. but they also had 12 turnovers in the first 16 minutes... that needs to change.
imho what's not promising is matta moving to a 2-3 zone on defense. they tried out a 2-2-1 full court pressure, which if anything can take off 4-5 seconds a team has on the shot clock once they cross half court. but i don't think this group, at least w/the eyeball test, is strong defensively. too often marquette was able to get the ball inside at the foul line, and w/2 wings breaking to the basket from each side, get easy buckets. maybe matta is thinking to extend the zone out to try and negate 3's, and willing to give up more 2's as a trade off. but marquette was able to maneuver the ball around to get plenty of clean 3 looks, so at best that appears to be a work in progress. with the youth of this team overall, defense may be its eventual downfall vs the uw's and msu's, but offensively the upside looks real good.
btw during timeouts one of the things they do on the scoreboard is celebrity lookalikes, finding people in the crowd who bear a resemblence to famous people. last night, the last pic they put up was one of greg oden, and his usual sullen look. the fan next to it? well, it was oden, who played along and changed his face to being pretty eeyore-like. hilarious and very good natured. he got a great hand. last i knew he was back taking classes at osu but i don't know if he's still enrolled this year or not.

I got to watch a bit of the Duke vs. Michigan St and UK vs. KU games last night. It wouldn't surprise me if Duke and UK made it to the NCAA championship game. Both teams are loaded for a championship run.
UF vs UK will be entertaining, but nobody else in the SEC stands a chance against the wildcats. If UF is full roster healthy come the SEC season, the Gators will have a shot at the game in Gainesville. I don't think UF stands a chance in Lexington or in the SEC tourney. The Gators are the only SEC team that has a shot at stopping UK from matching UF's first time ever 18-0 SEC season last year.

But OSU doesnt see Wisky til March 8th which is too bad as its often the best game we see in conference play.

nice test for the b-ball bucks tonite in louisville vs pitino's cardinals. l'ville will press and get up/down the court at a frenetic pace, which will challenge scott, russell, williams, thompson, et al in terms of handling the ball. also will be curious if thad sticks w/the 2-3 zone on defense, since the cards have had some struggles shooting from the outside so far this year. looking forward to it.

Well, the first half is nearly over and OSU is showing their immaturity. Down 29-13 w 2:45 left. They're lett Louisville force them into playing the cards sloppy game, getting killed by their bigs around both buckets, Plus ul is draining 3s. We've got lots of teaching points on the horizon. 35-16 w/ 0:43 left now. Ugh.

Russell needs to drive more to the hoop and quit jacking up 3's but no mistake about, he was the reason OSU worked it self back into the game at one point being down 19.
