Funny how civility is becoming more shocking these days. Lol. Thought about that a few weeks ago walking the dog on a Saturday gameday morning here. In my house alone we have Buckeyes, a Sparty and a Clemson tiger. UC, OU (Athens) on either side. On my block you can add psu, va tech, IU and another Sparty. In our development you can add Purdue, UM, UNL, LSU, Alabama, UK and another Clemson couple. There's an Oregon guy who works out at our gym. Half of our neighborhood is either OSU grads or have strong buckeye ties, but the other half is literally from lots of other places. Oops. Left out the guy from Arizona state. I question his sanity the most, moving from Tempe back to central Ohio. Lol Then I must really be insane since I would love to leave sunny Florida to move back home. And just for the record, my wife agrees... with the insanity part.

Had a company event out in Phoenix the week before Christmas. Clear blue skies and mid 70s. Gorgeous. About 10 yrs ago we had a director in Scottsdale who would hold his summer quarterly meeting there, because flights were so cheap. It was July. I burned my forearm leaning up against a car as we were headed to a restaurant. Unreal. It was a dry burn, though. Lol

earlier in the year, i said osu would be lucky to finish 9-9 in the league and make the tournament. but in the last two weeks matta has pushed the right buttons, made the right moves, and this team has turned it around. tate's energy is now in the starting line up, and you can only hope that inspires amir to up his game in the post. we need him too. you can also see russell's immense talent maturing more and more w/every game. loving's overall game, scott's improvement partnering w/russell in the backcourt, sammy being sammy, kam being kam, and thad sticking w/the man to man defense that's continued to improve.
purdue will be tough per usual in west lafayette wednesday night. the boilers are big up front... amir and mcdonald have to show up and affect the outcome. 4 of the next 5 are on the road (at rutgers, psu, at msu, at um). if at worst we win 3 of those 5, to be 20-7/9-5 heading into the last 2 weeks of the regular season, i like our chances to get in and have a shot at winning a couple games.
a lot of people talked about how incredible meyer's coaching job was this year, and they were right. but if this team enters march w/a shot at the league title, this will be matta's best coaching season since arriving in columbus, by far.

Just heard that Marc loving did not make the trip to Purdue. Marta said something about him not deserving the privilege of wearing the uniform. Not sure if it's temporary or not. Will definitely hurt our chances tonight.

bucks bounced back nicely from the close loss at purdue, routing rutgers 79-60. russell had a triple double (23 pts, 11 assists, 11 reb), tate had 20, bates-diop looked impressive replacing loving w/14. bucks shot well and did a great job going to the hole, getting numerous easy buckets on pick/rolls, + sammy had another couple dunks off inbounds plays. rutgers is rutgers, but they did give uw (minus kaminsky) their only league loss of the season so far. thought we looked much more comfortable on offense than in west lafayette. very encouraging. home for psu wednesday, then road trips to sparty on 2/14 and um 2 weeks from tonite.
fyi russell's triple double was the 1st ever by a frosh in osu hoops history, just the 4th ever (2 by evan turner, 1 by dennis hopson back in the mid 80s) for the program.

lol. thanks. gotta work on that name. went to the osu-psu game last nite. bucks did what they should have done to an inferior (and man psu is inferior this year) opponent; got out to a 12-0 lead and never looked back. sammy had one of his better games shooting and put in a career high 22. russell did not shoot well, as the nitts concentrated on bodying up on him as he drove the lane, but he still had 17 and 7 assists. but amir williams still struggled... he continues to bring the ball down below his waist when he gets it down low. 3 different times after doing that, he either had the ball stolen or had to alter his shot. tate and bates-diop continue to show their potential (9 pts in 27 min; 7 pts in 18), but this team cannot advance in march w/o better play in the post. osu's won 5 of its last 6 now... tough game ahead in east lansing, although matta has certainly held his own vs izzo. he's 11-10 vs msu since coming to columbus in '05; pretty sure that's the only losing record izzo has vs any big 10 team in that span. finally, cwg, good to see you at the game last night.

Couldn't agree more with everything here. Penn St was determined not to let Russell kill them so Sam did. Russell still had 17pts. Can't agree more with Mark on Amir. We had a long talk at halftime about this issue. The next time he doesn't bring the ball down after catching it will be the first time. I like the hustle and heart of Scott but he can't shoot at all. He had 1 jump shot that literally hit the backboard and side of the rim. Ugly to put it nicely. I love Tate. Kid hustles, plays hard and is going to make life miserable for other big 10 teams for 4 years. And to Penn St being inferior. You couldn't pay me to watch Rutgers vs Penn St play Mark as always very nice to see you as well.

tough loss on saturday in east lansing. izzo rotated 2 or 3 guys on russell and really bodied him up, which the refs allowed, and demarcus didn't handle it well imho. shannon scott played maybe his best game of the season, but other than sammy no one else really contributed on offense. and yet, if we just hit ft's (made only 5-13) we would have had a great chance to win. a kid named valentine hitting a game-winning 3 on 2/14... brother.
so now, in order to finish in the top 4 of the league and get the tournament double-bye, osu really needs to run the table in its last 5 games, beginning at ann arbor sunday. then unl/purdue at home, psu on the road and wrap up w/uw on 3/8. 4-1 may or may not be good enough, and 3-2 or worse means you start playing wednesday night, needing 5 wins in 5 days to win the tournament. impossible. 7 teams have between 4 and 6 league losses (bucks are 8-5/19-7), and close road losses like the ones at msu, purdue and iu are hurting. this team isn't far away, but it needs a killer instinct to close out games that they have yet to prove.

well, that may have been the most embarrassing loss osu has suffered in the matta era. anytime you let spike albrecht to come off looking like an all-american qualifies as a most embarrassing event. when you're playing a team that's lost 5 straight, that's lost 6 of 7, that's lost it's two best players and has a decimated roster, the one thing you don't do is let them get energized w/a quick start. and that's exactly what we allowed. we didn't guard the 3, which is the one thing um can do. our bigs made it look like the pick and roll was some revolutionary offensive strategy that they've never seen before. sloppy ball handling (7 turnovers in the first 13:00). it was 31-11 w/7:00 left in the 1st half. um was 13-19 on fg's starting the game. absolutely putrid effort. the bucks have had bad starts in games this year but none vs a team as talent-less as the one playing in ann arbor sunday.
our bigs, williams and mcdonald, were non-existent on both ends. 0 points on 0-2 shooting from the field (amir did make 4 ft's). um's bigs, 2 nobodies, had 15 points, most of them layups on simply rolling to the hoop off picks. unreal. russell and albrecht were the 2 pg's. one of them is going to be playing in the nba next year, the other will be a senior on his way to being a grad assistant coach somewhere. they both had the same amount of points-16-and albrecht had 5 assists to russell's 2, 0 turnovers to russell's 5.
to osu's credit, they did clamp down to start the 2nd half and got it to 49-46 w/about 6:00 left in the game, but um hit a couple 3's, osu missed 3 ft's, turned the ball over a couple more times and loving threw up an airball. one team came out w/energy and one came out looking like they expected their opponent to simply roll over. i could not believe it.
so, osu is now 2 games behind 4th place purdue, the only team realistically that they can catch to get the double bye in the big 10 tourney. they must win the final 4 games (unl, at psu, pur, uw) to finish 12-6 in the league. if that doesn't happen, i don't think we make the ncaa. there is urgency and the players need to realize that. if i'm matta, i go small form here on out. i get tate and bates-diop (12 pts in the just 19 min) on the floor along w/russell, scott and thompson, w/loving, kam williams, mc donald and amir williams off the bench, frankly in that order. our bigs have become liabilities where their d/rebounding does not outweigh the lack of production on offense. tate and bates-diop bring more energy, more agility on d, better shooting. i said last week that this team wasn't far away from being good, but was still searching for the killer instinct to close out games. turns out i was only half right. this team is far away, and they are still searching.

The amazing part is all the bracketology experts still have Ohio St solidly in the NCAA tournament ESPN has us a 8 seed right now. God knows why. If we keep losing that will change This team looks so lost out there.
