Well, we've already changed the 18th century slave owners Constitution in substantial ways, right? They wrote the Second Amendment in the 18th century so that the U.S. government wouldn't take muskets away from their Southern slave patrol militias. Meanwhile, how did Australia get rid of their guns and solve their mass shooting problem? Here's your path, your only path, to get to Australia. An amendment may be proposed by a two-thirds vote of both Houses of Congress, or, if two-thirds of the States request one, by a convention called for that purpose. The amendment must then be ratified by three-fourths of the State legislatures, or three-fourths of conventions called in each State for ratification. Get to work. Off course you'll say that can't be done because....... But that is the only way to become Australia. If it can't be done, iyo because.......... what's the point in even bringing it up?
Some have said if you want to reduce gun violence by a significant % , eliminate the Negro resident in the ghetto. Just as absurd and just as unconstitutional even immoral. But reduce it it would. There, off course, the answer is reduce the ghetto. Gun violence will drop as fast as a floor in the TT on 9/11. That wasn't free fall btw. Guns will then be a minimal issue. Along side that, deal w mental health.
Re your wizened European communities, note Sweden. Though not yet to the statistic level of the USA, gun violence has exploded. Why? Due to gangs and neighborhoods in disadvantaged communities. Which have been ftmp created by accepting low level immigrants from the mideast. Shooting deaths had more than doubled between 2011 and 2019 and now account for 40% of violent deaths. While the numbers are lower, the trend is disturbing to those in Sweden. The comparison is obvious.
Daleko, I don't disagree that poverty is correlated with crime, including violent crime. But there are, certainly, poorer countries than the U.S. with far lower gun homicide rates. The decisive factor in our astronomically elevated gun homicide rate is the prevalence of guns in the U.S. We now have more guns in the U.S. than citizens!

Sweden is your example to what restrictive guns laws do, if you have a low end section of the population, especially those that were imported, w/o historical ties to the country and its standards. Poverty and mental heath ARE the answers, unless you can spearhead an amendment. Even then, the impoverished won't turn them in.
Eliminate the poverty or those impoverished and eventually gun violence is greatly reduced. Increase mental healthcare and the drop grows. What you are left with are criminal behavior of sane, not impoverished people, where guns aren't their only tool, and the one-offs. Red herring all you want but you have one path to Australia. Like it or not.

Bitch will bitch.
The bitching will never end from the Denver donkey luvin' bitching bitch. Daleko laid it all out in red and white, 100%, but the bitching, whining, complaining will only increase in the face of no possible way to eliminate, or even reduce the number of guns in private hands in the USA.
"But we must do something!" the bitch will loudly whine. That something will always be to make it harder for the people who need a gun the most, to get a gun legally and lawfully: non-criminal poor black people trapped in little Mogadishus all over the US. Why does he/her/they hate black people? Who knows. Racists come in every color and both sexes.
I suspect the person behind the s/n is actually a woman... Women never want to solve anything, they only want to talk it to death. For years. On this forum.

"Skyrocketed"? Two words....'sample size'. Sweden had about 300 gun incidents last year...total. Gun related deaths stands at about 50 for the year, and while that may be a lot for them, it's an average weekend in some neighborhoods in the US.

You want Australia? You have one path. So, we shouldn't try to fix what's broken about our country, eh? Six generations of my family fought in America's wars, going back to our Revolutionary War and our Civil War against the Confederate slave-owning rebels. And you're suggesting I should walk away? Geez... we finally passed legislation establishing a framework for universal health coverage-- a century after Teddy Roosevelt called for it. The Koch GOP fought it tooth and claw. They also fought against Social Security and Medicare, which dramatically reduced senior poverty in the U.S. We freed the slaves and granted them the Constitutional right to vote. 90 years later we passed the Voting Rights Act, to circumvent the violations of their Constitutional right to vote by white Southern state legislatures. Then the Republicon Koch SCROTUS blocked enforcement of the Voting Rights Act with their 5-4 Shelby v. Holder ruling. GOP state legislatures promptly began to suppress voting. We ended racial apartheid in the South. Why do you think we can't fix our deranged gun nut crisis?

Not that difficult to understand. 1) Our Constitution allows for amending its 18th century flaws-- like the old sanctioning of slavery and denying women and black people the right to vote. 2) Our Constitution is also subject to judicial interpretation and re-interpretation. Many Constitutional scholars, including Harvard Law grad Barack Obama, do not agree with the Koch-funded GOP SCROTUS judges blocking rational legislative gun control efforts. In fact, the vast majority of Americans don't agree with this corrupt Koch-bought SCROTUS. The intent of the Second Amendment authors was to permit the arming "well-regulated state militias"-- not yahoos who want to shoot citizens in schools and super markets.

L Glad you finally figured out there is a process in place to amend the Constitution. Am well aware people differ on 2A interpretation as well as the militia reference in 2A. Am also aware of the part about the right of the people to keep and bear arms. Apparently you missed that part.

You haven't even figured out yet that JFK was getting us out of Vietnam in the fall of '63. I took a lot of advanced science courses in college, en route to medical school, but I actually majored in American Studies at Brown-- graduating magna cum laude, and winning the Gordon Rhode Dewart Prize for the top pre-med student majoring in the humanities.
