Fuchs admits there is no racist connection, but bans it anyway? Further, even the claim of racist imagery is dubious. From Snopes: "We checked this conclusion with Patricia Turner, who has probably done more research on the “alligator bait” motif than anyone else in the world, asking whether she had ever come across information suggesting that the phenomenon might be real. “I have not seen any evidence to suggest that it was true,” she said, adding that it would have been all the more unlikely during the era of slavery, when a black child would have been a much more valuable commodity than an alligator." Want to add for those who don't know that Lawrence Wright is a great Gator who happens to be a black man. Gator Bait! was actually taken to new levels by him. Wright played on UF's 96 NC team. I'm not going to stop buying Gator gear, but this is extremely disappointing and completely unwarranted. Fuchs is 1-1 with me on political events. He did make the ruling that UF will make free speech available for everyone, conservatives included. I hope Gator Nation, black and white, rises up to complain about this ridiculous decision. |

Definitely seems to be a knee-jerk overreaction. That said, I can't see the fans refusing to do it even if the band isn't prompting them. As annoying as it is, it is unique to your fanbase and won't go away, IMO. Too much history behind it. |
